Backend and platform systems for products with real load behind them. Recently: a transportation data platform aggregating ~200 telematics integrations at Catena, and mileage telemetry processing millions of events daily at MileIQ.
The work I'm best at tends to look like this:
- Rebuilding a 30-day, multi-million-event aggregation after scheduled Lambdas couldn't finish inside the 15-minute execution limit. The AWS Batch scaffolding became the standard for long-running jobs on the team.
- Designing a phased path out of a legacy monolith, rerouting traffic into domain services without breaking existing endpoints.
- Extending a read-only public API into write-back across every integrated provider, with a schema that stayed consistent regardless of what sat downstream.
- Understand the product before choosing the architecture.
- Write decisions down. I introduced an RFC process at Catena. 20+ have been written by other engineers since.
- Stay close to the code and the incidents. On-call is where architecture gets audited.
- AI tooling is part of my daily loop for implementation, review, and debugging. I'm interested in teams treating that as an engineering practice rather than a novelty.
