fix: retry a lost refresh race by re-running the PR run, so the PR's required check clears - #63
Conversation
…ing a new one A dispatched run's check doesn't count toward the PR's required check, so the old retry went green elsewhere while the PR stayed red and the Slack alert was suppressed. A re-run does count, and reads the current CONFIG_JSON (both verified in lu_market). retry-on-race now dispatches the caller on the default branch with rerun_run_id; that helper run waits for the losing run to finish, re-runs its failed jobs, and alerts Slack if it can't. Callers swap their base_sha dispatch input for rerun_run_id. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re-check the attempt after the wait, alert on a cancelled or timed-out helper, treat only success/cancelled as nothing to do, refuse fork and >2h-old runs, serialise duplicate helpers per run, and tolerate isolated poll errors. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe inline-auth workflow dispatches a helper with the losing run ID. The helper validates the target run, waits for completion, and reruns failed jobs when eligible. Helper runs skip the normal alert, template-detection, and test jobs. ChangesInline-auth retry flow

proceed with the re-run when the read confirms attempt 1; if the attempt remains
unreadable, fail the helper without requesting another re-run or alerting Slack.

164-165:REACHED_WAITis set too early. It also does not reach the Slack step as intended.
GITHUB_ENVwrites apply to later steps in the same job. The Slack step is a later step, so the flag does reach it. The flag is set after validation and before therun_attemptcheck. A hand-dispatched helper for an already re-run loser exits 0 and does not alert, so this case is harmless.I found no defect here. This also resolves the earlier review concern about refused dispatches paging Slack.
208-217: LGTM!

retry-on-race only checked the head at dispatch time. A commit pushed while the helper waits gets its own pull_request run, so re-running the old one only spends a run and refreshes tokens alongside it. Read by PR number, so a merged PR's auto-deleted branch is a quiet skip, not a false page. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Description
Fixes
retry-on-raceinrun_tests_inline_auth.yml(#62): its retry went green, but the PR that lost the race stayed red and blocked, while the Slack alert was suppressed. What we measured in lu_market (forced races, PRs #849–#851, since closed):
run-tests / test-templatesstayedFAILUREwhile the retry run on the same commit was green.Re-run failed jobs) does count, and it reads the currentCONFIG_JSON. It refreshed cleanly and the PR's check went toSUCCESS. (be_market's fork assumed re-runs reuse the old secrets; they don't.)New flow:
retry-on-racedispatches the caller's workflow on the default branch withrerun_run_id=<its own run id>. A run can't re-run itself while still going.rerun-losing-runjob runs. It waits for the losing run to finish, then runsgh run rerun <id> --failed. Attempt 2 can't retry again, because retry-on-race requiresrun_attempt == 1.The helper only re-runs a run that is all of the following:
pull_requestrunDuplicate helpers for the same run are serialised. Dispatching on the default branch also removes the old "branch predates the trigger → 422" case.
check-changed-templates,test-templatesand the alert job all skip on the helper's dispatch run, and thebase_shadispatch path is removed.Caller change needed: swap the
workflow_dispatchinputbase_shaforrerun_run_id(README updated). lu_market follows in its own PR. Until it merges, a race in LU dispatches with an input LU's caller doesn't declare yet → 422 → the normal Slack alert fires, the same loud behaviour as no retry at all. be_market (still on its own fork) is unaffected and gets this when it moves to the shared file.Type of change
