Fix: Better scheme guesses for Hermes addresses - #73
Conversation
Follow-up to the rayl15#67 review: - A dot-less host (nuc, hermes-box) is a LAN machine: it gets http:// and counts as local, like .local names, so its web UI can sign in. - A *.ts.net name typed with a port gets http:// (tailscale serve answers https on 443, so a port means the server itself). - The address fields' placeholders drop https://, matching the error message. - Line 177: Update HermesService.isUnencryptedRemote so dotless HTTP hostnames
other than localhost still trigger a warning, even if isLocalHost classifies
them as local; preserve the .ts.net exception and HTTP scheme selection for LAN
names. Update the related HermesDashboard.base and isUnencryptedRemote tests to
verify the expected single-label-host warning and localhost exemption.

A dot-less name still gets http:// as the guess, but it no longer counts as local: it can also resolve through a search domain. So the API key warning shows for it and the web UI can't sign in over http, as before this PR. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Both nits from #67 done, and the follow-up commit keeps the right line: the scheme is only a guess, trust (plain-http warning, no http sign-in) still comes from isLocalHost. Tests cover the dot-less, tailnet-with-port and still-warns cases. CI green. Merging.
What & why
Follow-up to the two non-blocking nits on #67.
nuc,hermes-box) now gethttp://when typed without a scheme, like.localnames. This is only a guess at the scheme. A single-label name can also resolve through a DHCP search domain, so it isn't trusted: the plain-http API key warning still shows for it, and the web UI can't sign in to it over http. For that, use the machine's LAN or Tailscale IP, or https.*.ts.netwith an explicit port (myhost.tailnet.ts.net:8642) getshttp://:tailscale serveanswers https on 443, so a port means the Hermes server itself. Without a port it's stillhttps://.hermes.example.comwithout the scheme, which matches what the error message teaches. How it was tested
iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 27.2.
Built and ran on a physical device (simulator can't do Bluetooth / on-device MLX)
Verified the specific behavior this PR changes:
testDotlessAndTailnetPortAddressesUsePlainHTTPcovers:*.ts.netaddress with a portlocalhoststays trusted, and public hosts still warnFull suite on the device: 140 tests, 0 failures.
Checklist
xcodegen generateif files were added/removed (no files added)Breaking changes
None. Addresses typed with a scheme are unchanged, and the plain-http rules are the same as before.
Notes for reviewers
The only UI change is the placeholder text in the two address fields; no layout changes.
