Fix: Speak failed cloud-TTS sentences with the Apple voice - #64
Conversation
A Grok or OpenAI sentence whose request fails is now spoken in the Apple voice in its place in the reply instead of being skipped. The cloud queue pauses until the clips before it have played, so the two voices never overlap, and isSpeaking stays true throughout. Two failures in a row move the rest of the reply to the Apple voice. Stop and barge-in cancel the Apple sentence too. Voice previews in Settings keep showing the error instead. - A failure is counted before the queue is refilled, so the sentence after a second failure in a row is never sent to the cloud; requests already out are cancelled. - A fallback sentence only plays for the reply it belongs to, even if a stop and a new reply happen while it waits for earlier clips. - Cancellation is checked again after the sentence-start hook, so a stop there can't start playback. Thanks, this follows the shape from #62 closely and the ordering logic reads right: the drainer owns both audio paths, isSpeaking stays latched because drainTask is non-nil while the Apple sentence plays, the generation capture in speakWithAppleVoice covers stop-then-new-reply, and counting the failure before startSynthesis() is what makes "two in a row" stop the cloud requests. Asserting fallbackUtterances == 0 in the stop test is the right check.
One should-fix before merge (small, inline below): the Apple-voice wait has no upper bound, where the cloud wait has clipTimeout.
Nits, not blocking:
AppleFallbackSpeaker.speakre-implementsTTSService.selectedVoice. Astatichelper onTTSServicewould keep the voice choice in one place.- For my release notes: the Apple fallback isn't mixed into session recordings (as you noted). I'll call it out in the CHANGELOG.
Heads-up: this and #66 both add a test file to the pbxproj, so whichever merges second needs a quick rebase.

The cloud path bounds its wait with clipTimeout precisely because a blocked drainer means the recognizer stays paused for the rest of the reply. This wait has no bound: if the synthesizer never delivers didFinish/didCancel for the utterance (another AVSpeechSynthesizer instance holding the speech queue, a session interruption mid-utterance), the continuation never resumes, drainTask never clears, isSpeaking stays true and the agent is deaf until a wake word.
Please cap it, e.g. start a Task here that sleeps max(5s, 0.12s × sentence.count) and then calls finish(id) (after stopSpeaking) if that utterance is still current; cancel the task from finish. A log line when it fires would help diagnose a real occurrence.

Fixed in 67f938e, as you suggested. AppleFallbackSpeaker.speak starts a watchdog that sleeps max(5 s, 120 ms × sentence.count). If the utterance is still current when it wakes, it logs "Apple voice never finished a sentence; moving on", calls stopSpeaking, and finishes it. finish cancels the watchdog. A test covers the deadline. I also took the nit: the voice choice is now TTSService.userVoice, used by both.
If the synthesizer never reports a fallback sentence finished, a watchdog stops it after max(5 s, 120 ms per character) and the drainer moves on, so the recognizer can't stay paused. The Apple voice choice now lives in TTSService.userVoice, shared with the fallback. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Heads-up: main now has a GitHub Actions build (#68) that compiles the app and test target for iOS on every PR. Your next push here will get that check automatically, so no action needed beyond the review items above. #67 is merged, so a rebase on main is cheap now and avoids the pbxproj conflict between this PR and the other one. |

Merged main in (no rebase, to keep the review history), which brings #67 and the new CI build. Also took CodeRabbit's nitpick in 8141fdb: On the device (iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 27.2), the full suite passes: 132 tests, 0 failures, including all 7 |

Watchdog is exactly right: capped at max(5 s, 120 ms × characters), cancelled from finish, logs when it fires, and the deadline is unit-tested. Thanks for also moving the voice choice into TTSService.userVoice and for the overlap test, which pins down the pendingBuffers wait. CI is green on the merge with main. Merging.

What & why
Closes #62. When a Grok or OpenAI sentence fails (a 429, a timeout, no network), it used to be skipped, which left a silent hole in the reply. Now it's spoken in the Apple voice in its place. This follows the shape suggested on the issue:
isSpeakingstays true across the fallback, so the recognizer stays paused.stop()(barge-in, "Ok Vision stop") also cancels the Apple sentence.AVSpeechSynthesizer, using the voice chosen in Settings. It doesn't go throughTTSService, because the voice agent treatsTTSServicefinishing as the end of the reply and would start listening in the middle of it.How it was tested
iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 27.2.
Built and ran on a physical device (simulator can't do Bluetooth / on-device MLX)
Verified the specific behavior this PR changes:
CloudTTSFallbackTestsruns the issue's acceptance case on the device with real audio. A fake provider returns short WAV clips and fails chosen sentences.isSpeakinggoes false.lastFailure.I haven't triggered a real 429 against Grok or OpenAI live yet.
Checklist
xcodegen generateif files were added/removed (only the new test file's entries kept)Breaking changes
None.
CloudTTSService.init(provider:)is now internal instead of private so tests can inject a provider; the shared.grokand.openAIinstances are unchanged.Notes for reviewers
No UI changes, so no screenshots. The fallback audio isn't mixed into session recordings (the Apple system voice never was), only the cloud clips are.
