GitHub Bookmarks

GitHub Bookmarks is a Coda pack for syncing your starred repositories and looking up repository, issue, pull request, and release metadata from GitHub. It supports bookmark-style workflows as well as repo-specific monitoring in Coda.

Overview

  • Purpose: Sync your starred repositories, search GitHub, and pull repository activity into Coda tables.
  • Inputs: Repository identifiers, search queries, optional tags, optional state filters, and the connected GitHub account for starred repos.
  • Outputs: Repository objects and synced tables for starred repositories, repositories, issues, pull requests, and releases.
  • Audience: Coda users curating GitHub bookmarks, tracking repositories, open work, or release activity.

Requirements

  • Account(s): GitHub account for authenticated access, or none for public unauthenticated access.
  • Credentials: GitHub personal access token is optional but recommended.
  • External setup: Create a GitHub token if you need private repository access or higher rate limits.
  • Limits: Unauthenticated GitHub API requests have lower rate limits.

Installation

  1. Install the pack in a Coda doc.
  2. Optionally connect a GitHub personal access token.
  3. Use StarredRepos for a personal bookmarks table, or use RepoLookup, SearchRepos, and the repo-scoped sync tables for ongoing tracking.

Authentication

Authentication is optional but improves rate limits and private repository access.

  • Method: Header bearer token.
  • Required scopes or permissions: Token must allow access to the repositories you want to read.
  • Where credentials are entered in Coda: In the pack account connection prompt.

Example usage

Sync your GitHub bookmarks

  1. Connect a GitHub token.
  2. Add the StarredRepos sync table.
  3. Filter or sort your starred repositories by language, stars, topics, or updated date.

Track open work for a repository

  1. Add the Issues sync table with a repository such as owner/repo.
  2. Filter the table to open issues or sync PullRequests for review status.
  3. Use Repositories to keep the repository metadata and custom tags in the same doc.

Limitations

  • Private repository access depends on the connected GitHub token.
  • API rate limits apply, especially for unauthenticated requests.
  • The Issues table intentionally excludes pull requests from the issues endpoint.
  • StarredRepos only works when a GitHub account is connected.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Resolution
Repository not found Invalid repository identifier or insufficient access Verify owner/repo or connect a token with access
Rate limit error Too many unauthenticated requests Connect a GitHub account token
Empty issue sync Repository has no issues or filters exclude them Check state filter and repository activity
