An OpenStackDataPlaneDeployment re-derives every service outcome from the AnsibleEE Job of that service: the deployment conditions are rebuilt on each reconcile pass, and lib-common does not recreate a Job whose hash is unchanged. With preserveJobs: false the Jobs are deleted ten minutes after they finish, so a deployment still running once that happens waits forever for an execution it can neither find nor re-run, and reports no error.

Create the Jobs with cleanup deferred while the deployment is in flight, and apply the cleanup deadline only once the deployment reaches a finished state: deployed, or failed with the backoff limit exceeded.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Jobs are retained while a deployment is in progress, even when preserveJobs is disabled. After a deployment succeeds or fails after reaching its backoff limit, jobs are scheduled for deletion so they remain available for 10 minutes after the deployment finishes.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified when jobs are retained and deleted, and how they indicate which services have run during a deployment. The documented default for preserveJobs remains enabled.

Deployment Jobs remain available while a deployment is active. When preserveJobs is false, the controller assigns cleanup TTLs after deployment success or terminal backoff-limit failure. The change adds finished-state checks, updates descriptions, and adds functional tests.

Changes: Deployment Job retention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Completion and retention contract
api/dataplane/v1beta1/openstackdataplanedeployment_types.go, internal/dataplane/util/ansible_execution.go, api/bases/..., config/crd/bases/..., bindata/crds/crds.yaml, docs/assemblies/dataplane_resources.adoc
IsFinished recognizes deployment success and terminal backoff-limit failure. FinishedAt returns the deployment condition’s transition time when the deployment is finished and that time is available. Job creation preserves Jobs until deployment completion. API descriptions document the retention and cleanup timing.
Deployment-scoped Job TTL reconciliation
internal/controller/dataplane/openstackdataplanedeployment_controller.go, test/functional/dataplane/openstackdataplanedeployment_controller_test.go
The controller assigns TTLs after deployment completion and clears existing TTLs while the deployment is active. The TTL calculation accounts for elapsed time since each Job finished. Functional tests cover active deployments, success, terminal failure, and delayed Job completion.

Jobs can still be deleted after preservation is enabled if they already have cleanup deadlines. Clear those deadlines before merging.

reconciliation flow to clear TTLs on existing Jobs instead of returning
immediately. Ensure Jobs are retained when PreserveJobs becomes true, including
Jobs that already have a TTL set.
- Around line 490-491: Update the finished-job TTL assignment so each Job
remains available for the documented delay after the deployment completes,
rather than calculating retention from that Job’s earlier completion time.
Calculate the remaining TTL from the deployment finish time, or use a cleanup
mechanism that starts the delay then; preserve the existing TTL duration.
- Line 112: Update the deferred cleanup around reconcileJobTTL so it runs only
after helper.PatchInstance successfully persists the terminal status; skip Job
TTL reconciliation when the status patch fails, while preserving cleanup after a
successful patch.

An OpenStackDataPlaneDeployment re-derives every service outcome from the
AnsibleEE Job of that service: the deployment conditions are rebuilt on each
reconcile pass, and lib-common does not recreate a Job whose hash is unchanged.
With preserveJobs: false the Jobs are deleted ten minutes after they finish, so
a deployment still running once that happens waits forever for an execution it
can neither find nor re-run, and reports no error.

Create the Jobs with cleanup deferred while the deployment is in flight, and
apply the cleanup deadline only once the deployment reaches a finished state:
deployed, or failed with the backoff limit exceeded.
