Bug with dependency "ms-python.python" #908

Closed

Description

I'm trying to install extensions from local .vsix files:

  • ms-python.debugpy (name it A)
  • ms-python.python (name it B)
    But A tries to download and install B, and B tries to download and install A
    If install B first, the same happens...

And it's strange, that this happens only with Linux-64 versions... In Windows no such problem

I'm using:

  • VSCode 1.107.1
  • ms-python.debugpy-2025.18.0-linux-x64.vsix
  • ms-python.python-2025.20.1-linux-x64.vsix

    Is there a reason you are using the vsix vs the marketplace? This would fix that problem

    Yep. Due to security policy, internet access is not available on work computers. We decided to share a folder with extensions for everyone to use on a shared drive. Installation from the marketplace works stably, of course.
    Can these extensions download anything additional during installation?

    I think this would be a question for VS code. We only follow their rules here. ms-python.python has a dependency on ms-python.debugger in the package.json:

    "extensionPack": [
    		"ms-python.vscode-pylance",
    		"ms-python.debugpy",
    		"ms-python.vscode-python-envs"
    	]

    Do you get the same error for ms-python.vscode-pylance as well?

    The ms-python.debugger has a requirement of python though:

    "extensionDependencies": [
    		"ms-python.python"
    	],

    So it should work if you install the python extension first and then install the debugger.

    No. "Pylance" was installed correctly.

    The ms-python.debugger has a requirement of python though

    Well, I don’t quite understand how it should be... On the one hand, "python" installes "debugpy" because it is an extension pack, and on the other hand, "debugpy" depends on "python"...
    In my opinion, an extension pack is just a collection of extensions to install. Isn't it?

    Yes, an extension pack is a collection of extensions to install. AFAIK it will still work if it can't install the other extensions though. It doesn't require them to be there.

    Extension dependencies are different though. That's a requirement. So the ms-python.debugger extension requires ms-python.python. But not the other way around.
