Android and Apple both suggest a local MQTT root topic from a one-minute broker sample (meshtastic/design#167). A sample can't tell where a community root like msh/US/DMV serves, or which states border yours, so both clients need the same table. This serves it at /resource/mqttRoots as a bundled document, like eventFirmware.

What changed

  • data/mqttRoots.json: community entries, US subdivision neighbors, and geocoder-name to topic-segment mappings for the US.
  • Wired into tools/build-data.ts and the Worker's bundled table, bundledJson cache class.
  • tools/validate.ts checks every root against the firmware's root rules, entry areas, ISO 3166-2 codes and neighbor symmetry.
  • data/README.md and ROLLBACK.md list the new document.

No radio settings: Mesh Beacons carry those over RF. The wider registry question is meshtastic/design#168.

Seed entries

From the public broker, not from claims: 75 minutes under msh/US and msh/EU_868 (Oct 18), so every hourly map report lands. A root below the country or state level needs three distinct map-reporting nodes; the center is their median position and the radius their 90th-percentile distance, rounded up to 5 km with a 25 km floor. Wider than 250 km is a republisher or statewide root and stays out. No one draws an area; it is where the root's nodes are.

Root Reporting nodes Radius
msh/US/IL/Chi 23 50 km
msh/US/MeshSTL 21 50 km
msh/US/CA/socalmesh 17 120 km
msh/US/bayarea 17 200 km
msh/US/mqtt-bayme-sh 16 150 km
msh/US/NY/WNY 14 80 km
msh/EU_868/9A 10 175 km
msh/EU_868/nedermsh/potatonet 9 170 km
msh/US/PA/WPAmesh 8 145 km
msh/US/SecKC 7 145 km
msh/EU_868/DE/S-H 7 75 km
msh/US/IL/Central 6 100 km
msh/US/GSMC 5 150 km
msh/US/DMV 4 55 km
msh/US/CA/sacvalley 3 60 km
msh/US/GA/csramsh 3 45 km
msh/US/NY/CNY 3 100 km
msh/US/VA/VBMesh 3 25 km
msh/EU_868/Hamburg/hamburg 3 25 km
msh/EU_868/Scotland 3 30 km

Testing

pnpm build:data, pnpm typecheck:v2, pnpm validate and pnpm test (63 passing, including a cache-policy row for the new route). Not on the legacy tinyhttp server or in tools/parity.mjs, since it is v2-only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a community-maintained MQTT roots catalog with 19 geographic mesh-root records, coverage details, neighboring subdivisions, and subdivision-name mappings.
    • The catalog is available at /resource/mqttroots and is included in rollback restoration.
  • Improvements
    • Catalog entries are checked for valid root names, geographic details, subdivision codes, and consistent neighbor relationships. The catalog is cached for up to 24 hours.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a hand-maintained MQTT roots dataset with root and subdivision data. Tooling validates and generates the dataset. The Worker serves it at /resource/mqttroots as a bundled resource.

Changes: MQTT Roots Resource

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dataset and validation
data/mqttRoots.json, data/README.md, tools/validate.ts
Adds MQTT root and subdivision data, documents its fields, and validates root formats, locations, subdivision codes, neighbor relationships, and segment names.
Generated resource and Worker delivery
tools/build-data.ts, worker/src/index.ts, tests/worker/router.test.ts, ROLLBACK.md
Includes the dataset in generated documents and the Worker bundle. Adds the route to the cache-policy test and the bundled-document list used by rollback guidance.

The documented MQTT roots URL reaches the Worker resource, and the earlier sampling contradiction is not present in the current documentation. No identified issue prevents merging after normal checks.

A rabbit checks the roots at dawn,
Through maps and names it hops along.
The Worker serves the dataset bright,
With cached paths set just right.
It nibbles clover, pleased to see,
New roots mapped for all to see.
