Summary

Diagnostic runs previously waited for their predecessor's host collection work
because counters, current-buffer pointers and receive paths represented one run
at a time. This change lets a successor enqueue while its predecessor's
reconciliation and background file work continue. Device operators remain serial;
records, terminal accounting and host extensions are attributed by run epoch.

Part of #2429.

Runtime behavior

  • Each supported owner publishes per-producer accounting into a collector-owned
terminal bank reserved by run epoch. The host copies and reconciles it under
that run's claim before reuse; storage without producer-stop proof remains
quarantined. Export storage has its own lifetime and budget.

  • Diagnostic admission is all-or-nothing. Capacity refusal submits nothing;
the caller waits outside the lane mutex on credit generation, against one
fixed deadline. Cleanup preserves the run's first error and reports lane
    poisoning separately when both occur.

  • Both architectures and both runtimes answer joined-diagnostic capability from
their actual producers. A5 host_build_graph explicitly refuses ArgsDump at
the C prepare entry before bind or diagnostic allocation. It first validates
and owns this attempt's carrier, then uses the existing cleanup path to
publish exact-epoch release proof. Only successful cleanup lets upper layers
release that invocation's inputs and keep the lane usable; invalid/live
storage, recursive preparation and failed cleanup retain their protections.
Its supported diagnostics remain available. Per-task ArgsDump on that
resident AICore-scheduler route is deferred to a separate change.

  • A5 host_build_graph stages PMU results per executed subtask and settles
expected graph coverage only after proved core retirement. Register restore
depends on retirement independently of accounting success. Strict task-matched
    and nonzero-cycle assertions remain enabled.

  • Host extension publication carries the publishing run's epoch into its
admitted bucket, charges its byte budget before copying, and rejects unknown,
duplicate or late publications. The three ArgsDump-capable backends retain
checks of each selected argument's value at its actual task boundary.

  • TMR ScopeStats exports keep the actual task-window, dependency-pool, heap-byte
and tensormap capacities of their own resolved bind, including cached arenas.
Immutable host metadata travels through prepared execution into the admitted
epoch slot, so delayed export cannot read a successor's shared header. Missing
required metadata refuses admission before consuming credit. HBG behavior,
retention-off behavior, JSON schema and device ABI remain unchanged.

  • Terminal identity is checked in a post-completion snapshot. Documentation now
    states the existing stores/barrier/flush and reserved-bank lifetime contract;
sharing a cache line provides no atomic-publication guarantee. The publication
implementation and strict failed-run discard behavior are unchanged.

Backend Diagnostic owners in scope
A2/A3 host_build_graph Chip swimlane, ArgsDump, PMU, ScopeStats, HBG host graph
A2/A3 tensormap_and_ringbuffer Chip swimlane, ArgsDump, PMU, ScopeStats, TMR DepGen
A5 host_build_graph Chip swimlane, PMU, ScopeStats, HBG host graph; ArgsDump explicitly unsupported
A5 tensormap_and_ringbuffer Chip swimlane, ArgsDump, PMU, ScopeStats, TMR DepGen

This is the supported scope, not a claim that every acceptance criterion passes.
Joined simulation launches, kernel mode and capture are not added by this work.

Per-run preparation configuration

A native run captures its PMU selection and swimlane level before binding.
A prepared successor therefore reserves its own optional PMU cells and scheduler
activity buffers while the runner retains its active predecessor's device
configuration. Ordinary scheduler trace cells remain unconditional. The captured
selection survives preparation waits and delayed export; registration and prewarm
without a native run retain their legacy runner-query fallback. Device execution
and diagnostic compatibility checks for joined launches are unchanged.

Terminal backing initialization

Every retained terminal allocation is initialized across all banks and the full
producer stride before its addresses or reservations become usable. Mapped
allocations use their actual host view and the existing store barrier; hostless
allocations use the platform's checked synchronous H2D callback. Initialization
failure refuses launch. Failed unmap/free retains the exact backing and cleanup
context through collectors, runners and the C API for explicit close retry.
Reconciliation still scans the full stride, accepts sparse producer identities
and reports claimed-but-unclosed records as unknown; admission and bank reuse do
not erase a live allocation.

This fixes the storage-initialization contract exposed by the prior Ubuntu A3
simulation accounting failure: 24 real producers plus inactive epoch-1 entries
28/53 contaminated the snapshot. The failing allocation's initial bytes were not
captured, so that diagnosis does not exclude every possible external writer.
It does not identify or repair the independent onboard PMU control-loss cause.

ArgsDump progress and failure evidence

Admission, slot release and transport progress update the writer generation
under the same mutex as its condition-variable check. Admission/release first
leave the epoch-state mutex, then use the existing progress helper, preserving
credit notifications and avoiding a new nested lock. This corrects a plain
counter accessed under two unrelated mutexes, also present on main.

On processing-deadline or reference-release failure, bounded host-only logs now
name the run, cut and actual control request, then sample existing atomic queue,
watermark, processed and per-shard ACK fields. The mixed-time snapshot is
explicitly diagnostic; it grants no completion or reuse permission. There are
no new device reads, normal-path probes, plain-target reads, timeout changes or
weakened quarantine decisions. Logging exceptions cannot replace the original
error.

This race has not been established as the cause of the prior A3 onboard
ArgsDump stall. That failure reached the 8000-ms processing deadline for native
run/epoch 1 and later failed a shard-reference handshake. Existing evidence
cannot distinguish unfinished drain proof from an unfinished collector callback.
Both runs' PMU controls read held72/lost0; that does not prove positive cycles
or resolve the independent earlier PMU zero-cycle failures.

Device ordering and PMU evidence

Successive joined runs belong to the same runner and use its persistent AICPU
stream. The predecessor's payload, own-AICore wait and whole-operator event
precede the successor's payload in that FIFO. The successor's AICore stream
also waits on the predecessor's whole-operator event. Thus every predecessor
entry thread returns before any successor entry setter executes, including
filtered threads and phase-scope destructors. Early host enqueue does not mean
early successor AICPU execution. The former contrary early-entry claim is
withdrawn; separate phase buffers or disjoint RunWall samples alone do not prove
writer identity. Simulation joins its producer threads before another run can
own execution. No additional host synchronization is introduced.

PMU init and close observations use separate fields in the existing terminal
cache line. Their evidence is bounded:

  • Matching enable bits at both endpoints do not establish uninterrupted enable.
  • An absent close note may mean no close, an epoch refusal, or lost publication.
  • Distinct calculated virtual addresses do not establish distinct physical
MMIO registers. One finalize per logical core does not prove exclusive
physical-window ownership; another logical core's restore could alias it.
  • AICore CTRL and AICPU PMU MMIO are separate code interfaces; shared bit names
do not establish hardware aliasing. HAL PMU geometry remains unverified.

A3 zero-cycle PMU results remain unresolved. The a4 CI run failed strict
HBG epoch 2 with 513 zero rows and init enabled=72/close lost=72. Local a4
measurements reproduced the same signature on a third host: one HBG epoch
had 513 zero rows while the next epoch and later same-device runs were positive.
A bounded serial control passed; its matched joined run reproduced zero counts.
Other joined runs passed, so this association neither identifies the writer nor
establishes a fix. Raw CSV counts, control readbacks and host logs were retained.
The capacity and CI-budget repairs change no PMU product behavior or assertions.
Physical MMIO identity and the source of the enable transition remain unproven.
The known same-run plain-global race is separate from cross-run FIFO ordering
and is not claimed fixed.

Axis-checker preprocessing

check_ut_cpp_axis.py groups equivalent entries before scheduling preprocessing.
Its key is the exact preprocess_command(entry) argv, resolved working directory
and resolved entry.file. No extra .o operand, define or include path is
stripped. Bounded parallel work evaluates each key once per invocation, and each
target still receives the union of its own entries. Case classification,
waivers, unattributed-entry errors and preprocessing failures retain their meaning.

Read-only inventory of the existing saved compile database found 1,447 covered
entries, 817 exact keys and 630 repeats
across 359 covered targets. The earlier
808-key/639-repeat estimate is withdrawn because it used additional normalization
and an incomplete key. No compiler or preprocessor was run for these counts.
Six new regression cases cover sharing without mixing target coverage, distinct
cwd/defines/include paths/source identities, per-invocation lifetime and failure
propagation. They have not been run locally. All six passed in aaa041
macOS Python CI; those synthetic cases do not establish full-checker timing.

These counts are not a timing measurement. Axis coverage, stub linkage and
exporter roundtrip occupy named sequential CI steps, preserving their original
commands, self-CPU venv activation and ordinary failure propagation.

Bounded macOS CI budget

The a4 macOS job passed Python (3340 passed, 21 skipped, 108 deselected) and
all 358 CTest targets. It reached axis coverage about 19m45s into the 20-minute
job budget, was cancelled about 32 seconds into that step, and never started
stub linkage or exporter roundtrip. The annotation confirms the job-wide
20-minute limit. C++ compilation took about 11m28s; there is no evidence that
the axis checker hung. Same-head Linux completed axis in 42s and stub linkage
in 13s, which already exceeds the nominal remaining macOS allowance.

GitHub-hosted macOS now receives a 30-minute job ceiling; Linux and self-CPU
retain 20 minutes. Every command, case, required tail step, failure gate,
CTest per-case 300-second timeout and parallelism setting is unchanged.
This allows a stalled macOS job up to ten additional runner-minutes; it does
not promise a duration or improve performance. Every exact-head CI must
complete all three tail checks. A repeated timeout requires phase diagnosis,
not an automatic further increase.

Validation and status

  • Current publication: head 5cab632fed2d3ff88e8c7483908e926c932cb833, base
    2ee57567d01d0d86d5afb605f15e644a06a16200, one commit.
  • Rebased onto main, preserving its resource-growth and workspace ownership,
prepare rollback/source-reference release, native recursive-prepare refusal,
    backend-specific tests and graph-descriptor initialization. Main's source-file
APT refresh classification is included; it does not guarantee recovery from
    persistent package-payload HTTP503 failures.
  • Unsupported ArgsDump preparation: 7/7 new host cases passed once across
two targeted executables. They exercise exact-epoch one-shot receipts,
    subsequent prepare/run plus flush/close, invalid/live/occupied storage,
recursive rejection and cleanup failure without release proof. The sim target
uses the real C entry with the existing runtime stub; the onboard target uses
the real A5 HBG runtime maker with CPU transport. These results do not prove
physical NPU behavior or Python forked-child survival. New-head CI must qualify
    the existing public joined-attribution scene.
  • Per-run bind configuration on the preceding integrated source: an isolated
    original-source build plus the new
PMU-off→on test fails the intended assertions (identical successor/predecessor
layout size and reads from runner-global settings). The repaired source passes
5/5 new host cases: four real native-context/scheduler-layout transitions
and legacy fallback. Each source/filter ran once. GNU10.3.1, Debug/C++17,
hardware tests disabled; full logs, XML and source/dependency/binary hashes
retained. These tests do not launch a predecessor, execute devices, prove the
final serial-launch path or validate CCE compatibility.
  • Prior source revisions passed capacity14, terminal24 and ArgsDump18 targeted
new host instances. Those tests were not repeated after integration and are
not presented as exact-head validation. Static pre-commit checks passed for
this publication without bypass or source changes.
  • A matched old baseline also produced PMU zero rows on the same card where
another run was positive. Later private observations with all positive rows
are nonreproductions, not repairs. No experimental probes or register changes
enter this publication; strict identity, numerical, nonzero-cycle and cleanup
    assertions remain intact.
  • Previous head667 CI failed A5 onboard and macOS A5sim at the unsupported
ArgsDump refusal: the early guard returned without the preparation-release
receipt, after which the child exited before flush completed. This publication
repairs that host contract; it does not enable A5 HBG ArgsDump. The separate
    A3 HBG scene failed with 513 zero-cycle rows, init enabled=72/close lost=72.
Exact CTRL 0x7→0x2 values were printed only for the first reporting producer
and the task-bearing cores, not individually for every producer. That scene
did not reproduce the original ArgsDump processing timeout; its root cause
remains unresolved. Later TMR joined-attribution passed in that job.
New-head CI is pending; no full integration pass is claimed. CodeRabbit is
    a separate external status.
  • No new local device scene, old-test rerun, full runtime rebuild, install,
manual CI retry/cancel/dispatch, comment/reply/resolution or merge was made
during publication. Existing diagnostic artifacts remain preserved.

Not Ready: A3 PMU zero/lost-control results, the original ArgsDump processing
stall's root cause and exact-head CI qualification remain unresolved. The host
progress race repair is not proof of that stall's cause. A5 HBG ArgsDump remains
explicitly unsupported. External #2600 owns PMU host cleanup; its work and open
#2614 cleanup changes are not imported.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds per-run terminal accounting for ArgsDump, PMU, DepGen, and ScopeStats. Host runners coordinate retained-run capacity and report diagnostic-capacity refusals. Workers can wait for credit and retry prepared runs. The change also updates joined-run eligibility and adds accounting, admission, and attribution tests.

Changes: Diagnostic run lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Terminal accounting and producer close
src/common/platform/include/common/*, src/common/platform/include/aicpu/*, src/*/platform/shared/aicpu/*, src/*/runtime/*/scheduler/*, src/*/runtime/tensormap_and_ringbuffer/aicpu/*, src/*/platform/onboard/aicpu/kernel.cpp
Kernel arguments and producer APIs now support per-run terminal banks. AICPU collectors publish run counts at close, and scheduler and executor paths call the close functions.
Host bank ownership and reconciliation
src/common/platform/include/host/*runs.h, src/common/platform/include/host/*collector.h, src/common/platform/shared/host/*, src/*/platform/include/host/pmu_collector.h, src/*/platform/shared/host/pmu_collector.cpp
Collectors reserve terminal banks, reconcile producer counts with host receipts, and retain device backing when stop or release is not established. Retained-run admission reports capacity refusals and signals credit changes.
Runner admission and terminal-bank wiring
src/common/platform/onboard/host/device_runner_base.*, src/*/platform/{onboard,sim}/host/device_runner.*, src/common/platform/include/host/run_boundary.h
Runners coordinate owner admission and rollback, set per-run bank addresses after admission, and settle failed runs using completion and producer-stop state. Collector rebuilds are deferred while retained consumers remain outstanding.
Credit APIs and retry behavior
src/common/worker/*, src/common/platform/{onboard,sim}/host/c_api_shared.cpp, python/bindings/task_interface.cpp
Runtime APIs expose credit generation, waiting, and cancellation. Capacity refusals leave eligible prepared launches retryable; Python raises RuntimeError for the refusal.
Lane waits and joined-run eligibility
src/common/worker/chip_run_lane.*, src/common/platform/include/host/joined_diagnostic_eligibility.h
Run lanes wait outside the lane mutex with a fixed refusal deadline. Joined launches require matching diagnostic settings and backend approval.
Validation
tests/ut/cpp/common/*, tests/st/a2a3/*/test_dfx_joined_launch_attribution.py, tests/st/a5/*/test_dfx_joined_launch_attribution.py, tests/ut/cpp/support/weak_link_placeholders.cpp
Tests cover terminal accounting, capacity refusal and retry, credit signaling, joined-run rules, and per-run artifact attribution on simulation and onboard configurations.

Diagnostic runs that overlap can fail instead of retrying when DepGen output slots are busy. Retried admissions can stall on terminal banks that were never returned. Scope-stats artifacts can report zero device counters. These should be fixed before merging.

Ordinary early enqueue already lets a successor reach the device queue
while its predecessor executes. Most diagnostics refused that: the host
reset shared counters per run, read a "current buffer" a successor would
overwrite, and the receive paths knew one run at a time. So a collecting
submission waited for the run ahead of it to finish its host work.

This gives the same early enqueue to runs with diagnostics on. The device
still executes one operator at a time; what overlaps is a run's
reconciliation and its background file work with the successor's device
execution. Records and host extension sections belong to the run that
produced them, through its own epoch and admitted storage.

- Publish per-producer accounting into collector-owned terminal banks,
reserved by run epoch. Copy and reconcile under the run's claim; keep
unproved storage quarantined until producer-stop evidence permits reuse.
- Initialize every terminal bank and producer slot in actual backing before
exposing addresses or reservations. Use the mapped host view or checked
synchronous H2D, and reject launch when initialization fails. Preserve the
exact allocation and cleanup context across failed unmap/free and close
retry; keep full-stride reconciliation and sparse producer semantics.
- Protect ArgsDump admission, release and transport progress with the same
mutex as the writer predicate. Leave the epoch mutex before notification.
On processing/reference failure, log bounded mixed-time atomic cut and
shard observations with the actual request identity; preserve the original
deadlines, failure results, quarantine and device ownership.
- Admit every requested diagnostic owner together, charge host payloads
before copying, and wait for capacity outside the lane mutex against one
fixed deadline. Refusal submits nothing and fails only the affected run.
- Capture each native run's PMU and swimlane selection before preparation.
A successor sizes its optional scheduler storage from its own immutable
HostApi selection while the runner retains its active predecessor's
device configuration. Registration and prewarm keep legacy fallback.
- Support joined diagnostic admission on both architectures and runtimes.
A5 host_build_graph refuses ArgsDump explicitly because its resident
AICore scheduler provides no per-task AICPU capture boundary. Preserve
the supported diagnostics and roll back upper-layer preparation state.
Refuse only after validated carrier ownership, then use existing cleanup
to settle the exact epoch and publish release proof. Invalid, live and
recursive requests cannot overwrite storage; failed cleanup certifies
nothing. A supported successor can prepare after a clean refusal.
- Measure A5 host_build_graph PMU through per-subtask staging cells and
settle only the graph's expected coverage after proved core retirement.
Keep register restoration separate from accounting success, gated on
retirement. Preserve task-matched, strictly nonzero PMU acceptance.
- Attribute host graph extensions to the publishing run's admitted bucket;
reject duplicate, late and unknown-run publications. Retain original
argument values and task-boundary checks on the three capture backends.
- Keep independent PMU init and close observations within the terminal's
existing cache line. Document that endpoint enables do not prove an
uninterrupted interval, absent close notes do not prove missing closes,
and calculated virtual addresses do not establish physical MMIO identity.
- Retain each TMR run's actual ring and tensormap capacities from its
resolved cold or cached bind layout through prepared execution and its
collector slot. Refuse missing required metadata before admission takes
credit; delayed exports never read a successor's shared header. Preserve
HBG metadata behavior, the JSON schema and device ABI.
- Describe terminal identity as a post-completion stamp, not an atomic
cache-line publication or a live release flag. Preserve the existing
stores, barrier, flush and bank-lifetime implementation.
- Deduplicate axis-checker preprocessing by its exact executed argv,
resolved working directory and source identity. Group before scheduling
bounded parallel work and preserve each target's coverage union, waiver
rules and failure propagation. Keep results within one invocation.
- Expose axis coverage, stub linkage and exporter roundtrip as separate
sequential CI steps, preserving their commands, failure propagation,
self-CPU environment activation. Give GitHub macOS a bounded 30-minute
job ceiling; Linux and self-CPU retain 20 minutes.

The persistent AICPU stream orders every successor entry after its
predecessor kernel returns, including filtered threads and phase-scope
destructors. The AICore stream waits for the predecessor's whole-operator
event. Early host enqueue does not imply overlapping AICPU entry writers;
no extra synchronization or speculative register operation is introduced.

The saved compile database has 1447 covered entries and 817 exact replay
keys. These count repeated work, not a measured speedup. The a4 macOS run
passed Python and all 358 CTest cases but reached axis coverage after
19m45s of a 20-minute job budget. Preserve every check and concurrency
setting while allowing ten additional minutes for macOS completion and
variance. New-head CI must validate the full required tail.

Zero-cycle PMU results remain unresolved. A matched old17129 baseline
also produced zero rows; later instrumented positive runs do not prove
repair or attribute the failure to this change. Strict positive-cycle,
identity, numerical and cleanup assertions remain intact. No private
open-gate intervention or experimental register reads enter this commit.

Resource-growth waits keep the mainline plan and workspace ownership
contracts alongside diagnostic-credit waits. Verified prepare rollback
releases source references; ambiguous cleanup retains ownership. Native
recursive-prepare refusal and backend-specific test fixtures remain intact.

Prior targeted host validation passed capacity14, terminal24 and
ArgsDump18 new instances. Those results belong to the previous source;
the integrated source additionally passes five new targeted host cases.
An original-source counterexample fails the intended layout/getter checks;
the fixed cases cover real binding transitions and legacy fallback. They
exercise no launched predecessor, device execution or CCE frontend.
The original ArgsDump timeout and PMU failures remain separate unresolved
observations. Main's APT source-refresh classification addresses a distinct
installation baseline and does not guarantee recovery from persistent
package payload HTTP503 failures.

Seven new host cases cover refusal receipt, subsequent prepare/run,
flush and close, invalid/live storage and failed-cleanup protection.
They use the real C entry and CPU transport, not physical NPU execution
or forked-child qualification; new-head CI must establish those paths.
