Problem

Following the current WebSocket docs at patterns/websocket.html produces a
runtime error on Elysia 2. The docs show .ws() working with no additional
setup, but Elysia 2 now requires the WebSocket capability plugin to be
registered explicitly.

Copying the first example from the docs and running it against
elysia@2.0.0-beta.30 (from src on the kiana branch, Bun 1.4.3) fails at
startup:

[Elysia] listen() failed: 4096 |                if (kind === 'ws') {
4097 |                  const ws = this['~ext']?.capability?.ws
4098 |                  const provider = ws?.provider
4099 |
4100 |                  if (this['~hasWS'] && !provider)
4101 |                          throw new Error(wsCapabilityRequired)
                     ^
error: [Elysia] .ws() requires the WebSocket capability: import { websocket } from 'elysia/websocket' and .use(websocket())
      at ~resolvedCapability (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/base.ts:4101:15)
      at #buildRouterUnsafe (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/base.ts:7729:22)
      at #buildRouter (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/base.ts:7619:9)
      at #buildFetch (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/base.ts:8024:8)
      at build (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/adapter/bun/index.ts:482:18)
      at publish (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/adapter/bun/index.ts:907:19)
      at start (/home/Moonbug/dev/elysia/src/adapter/bun/index.ts:955:4)

This means the docs are slightly behind: Elysia 2 expects the user to import
and register websocket() from elysia/websocket before declaring any .ws()
route.

Fix

Updated patterns/websocket.md to:

  • Add a new "Enabling WebSocket" section explaining the capability plugin
  • Add import { websocket } from 'elysia/websocket' + .use(websocket()) to
    every .ws() example on the page
  • Move server-tuning options (idleTimeout, maxPayloadLength, etc.) from the
    old new Elysia({ websocket: {...} }) form into the websocket({...}) plugin
    call, since that is how Elysia 2 expects them

Verification

Tested on elysia@2.0.0-beta.30 (src on the kiana branch), Bun 1.4.3.
After adding the plugin registration, the following app boots cleanly:

import { Elysia, t } from 'elysia'
import { websocket } from 'elysia/websocket'

const app = new Elysia()
    .use(websocket())
    .ws('/echo', {
        message(ws, msg) {
            ws.send(msg)
        }
    })
    .ws('/validated', {
        body: t.Object({ name: t.String() }),
        query: t.Object({ id: t.String() }),
        message(ws, { name }) {
            ws.send({ id: ws.data.query.id, name })
        }
    })
    .listen(3000)

console.log('ws server on 3000')

Terminal output:

$ bun run ws-test.ts
ws server on 3000

Instead of the WebSocket capability error shown above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the WebSocket guide to show that applications must register WebSocket support before defining WebSocket routes.
    • Clarified that building a fetch handler without WebSocket support registered results in a capability error.
    • Explained that server-wide WebSocket tuning options are configured during registration, with updated route and message-validation examples.

Walkthrough

The WebSocket guide now shows websocket() registration before .ws() routes. It documents the error that occurs when the fetch handler is built without the plugin. It also shows server options passed to the plugin.

Setup, validation, and route examples register websocket() before .ws() routes. The configuration example passes idleTimeout to the plugin instead of using the Elysia constructor’s websocket field.

The plugin joins before routes begin~
websocket() makes the setup clear ♡
Missing it brings an error to light~
idleTimeout moves to the plugin’s side~
Now every example follows suit~
