Summary

Add opt-in recovery for failed or truncated exploration tasks while keeping task failure status explicit.

Changes

  • Validate dump frames, atom mappings, finite coordinates/forces, and deviation timestep matches.
  • Apply configured task failure budgets.
  • Write exploration_report.json with valid and excluded frames.
  • Feed the valid timestep allow-list into model-deviation selection.
  • Use DPDispatcher partial-result download and non-raising continuation options.

The dispatcher interface dependency is provided by the companion dpdispatcher failed-result policy PR.

Validation

  • Recovery policy, prefix salvage, and selection allow-list tests passed.
  • Python syntax and diff checks passed.

Closes #1981.

Depends on deepmodeling/dpdispatcher#687.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional recovery for failed model-deviation exploration tasks. When enabled, valid trajectory frames can be retained from failed tasks if prefix salvage is configured.
    • Recovery checks task outputs and applies configured limits for failed tasks, failure ratios, and minimum valid frames. An exploration report summarizes completed, failed, missing, and corrupt tasks.
    • Model-deviation selection uses only steps identified as valid by the recovery report. Recovery remains disabled by default.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1981 is open and directly linked. The current implementation adds opt-in recovery, preserves terminal failure status, validates trajectory and deviation records, salvages matched prefix frames, writes exploration_report.json, and filters selection with valid steps. The implementation still does not meet several concrete coding requirements. It reports completed, failed, missing, and corrupt tasks, but it does not distinguish intentionally stopped tasks from transient infrastructure failures. The policy provides failed-task and failed-task-ratio limits plus a minimum valid-frame limit, but it does not establish separate policies and ordering for unfinished tasks, usable or excluded frames, uncertainty classes, and failed FP labels, including interaction with FP ratio_failed. The report does not establish retry history or accepted labels. The available tests cover missing output, terminal failure and restart state, split-file mapping, prefix salvage, and allow-list selection, but they do not establish grouped and one-task-per-job consistency, resume retry-budget behavior, the ratio-policy interaction with ratio_failed, or all-invalid/all-failed stopping with strict training and model export.

Resolution

Implement the remaining issue #1981 state classifications and separated ratio policies with explicit denominators and ordering. Record retry history and accepted-label outcomes in the report. Add regression coverage for grouped and one-task-per-job dispatch, resume behavior, unfinished and terminal-failure policy interaction, FP ratio_failed, all-invalid/all-failed batches, and strict training and model export.

Reviewed head 96a72bf against base 0b9acec. Three independently reproduced recovery-path defects are attached inline: tolerated missing outputs still abort selection, incomplete/failed tasks can be reported as completed, and default split trajectories bypass cross-frame atom-map validation.

Validation: executed the unchanged recovery helpers and standard selector extracted via AST from this exact head, using temporary synthetic dump/deviation fixtures and NumPy. The completed-prefix fixture explicitly requested nsteps=1000 and contained a lost-atoms error log, with matching frames only at steps 0/10; this was a focused source-level reproduction, not an actual LAMMPS/DPDispatcher execution. No full-package test pass is claimed because dpdata is not installed locally. Existing exact-head Python 3.10/3.12, aggregate, Codecov, pre-commit and docs checks are successful; the CodeRabbit status is rate-limited, not a completed review. Companion dpdispatcher PR #687 remains open.

Implemented and validated the three review findings in commit e41c7f3: empty recovery allow-lists are honored before output loading, dispatcher terminal failures and truncated runs remain separate from frame eligibility, and atom-count/type mapping validation spans split trajectory files. Added end-to-end and regression coverage for missing outputs, terminal failure/restart behavior, and split-file mapping changes. The three inline review threads now have English replies.

Scoped re-review of repair head e41c7f3 against the previously reviewed 96a72bf (PR base remains 0b9acec).

The three original concrete defects are addressed in the checked paths: both selectors skip empty recovery allow-lists before opening missing output; dispatcher failure state is persisted and report validation reads unfiltered deviations; atom count/type mapping is carried between split dump files. Re-running post_model_devi with persisted failed state preserved both failed status and excluded timestep 10. The submitted serialized task-state shape and enum values match companion dpdispatcher #687 at ee8e64e9b55a29fc68400b5da49ca24cf1f0b787.

One new duration-check regression is attached inline.

Validation caveat: executing the unchanged exact-head helper/selector function bodies and the submitted test methods through an AST harness produced 7 passes and 1 failure. test_task_report_preserves_terminal_failure_and_restart_state fails at tests/generator/test_model_devi_recovery.py:163: its second direct _recovery_task_report call omits task_state and expected_last_step, so it returns completed; the helper does not reload those inputs from exploration_report.json. Exercise the production post_model_devi/persisted-state path for the restart assertion, or supply the retained inputs explicitly. This test failure does not mean the production persisted-state replay is broken; that separate focused replay passed.

No installed-dpdata integration run or real LAMMPS/DPDispatcher job was performed. Exact-head Python workflow 38018926388 is still queued; pre-commit and docs statuses are successful.

dpgen/generator/run.py:3287-3290
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject recovery for non-LAMMPS engines before submission.

model_devi_recovery currently reaches post_model_devi for GROMACS and Amber. That validator reads only LAMMPS dump files. GROMACS produces traj/*.gromacstrj, while Amber produces rc.mdout and rc.nc. The recovery report therefore has no valid frames or reports missing model_devi.out, and the run raises instead of completing.

Reject unsupported engines during recovery-policy normalization, or add engine-specific validators before enabling this path.

Reject zero-volume cells during dump validation.

_read_lammps_dump_steps accepts finite bounds with zero extent. _recovery_task_report then adds the timestep to dump_steps and valid_steps. The recovery report and downstream model-deviation selection can therefore use a degenerate cell for labeling.

Check that each bound has a strictly positive extent before accepting the frame.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restrict salvage_prefix to the contiguous valid prefix.

When a failed or truncated task has an interior missing or invalid timestep, valid_steps currently includes every later timestep that appears in both files. With salvage_prefix enabled, those later steps enter _read_model_devi_file and the model-deviation selection methods. This labels frames after the first gap even though the option is documented as prefix salvage.

Use the ordered deviation timesteps as the expected sequence. Stop at the first deviation timestep absent from the valid dump steps. Do not require numeric step + 1, because scheduled timesteps can advance by intervals such as 10.

Addressed the three additional recovery findings in commit 4d2fec9:

  • Enabled recovery now rejects non-LAMMPS engines before submission.
  • Dump validation rejects zero or negative box extents.
  • Prefix salvage stops at the first missing deviation timestep and excludes later frames.

Added focused regressions for engine validation, degenerate boxes, and non-consecutive salvage gaps. These points were posted outside the diff by CodeRabbit, so this top-level English comment records the fixes.

Cross-repository integration verification (2026-10-13)

I checked out dpgen#1984 (bfbf2284a4acdcea57047906cbb115fd9bcb6d92) together with dpdispatcher#687 (ee8e64e9b55a29fc68400b5da49ca24cf1f0b787) in one Python 3.12 editable environment.

Evidence:

  • inspect.signature(Submission.run_submission) exposes exactly continue_on_failure, raise_on_failure, and include_failed_results.
  • DP-GEN recovery tests: 11/11 passed.
  • DPDispatcher requested regression modules: 35/35 passed (test_clean_strategy + test_continue_after_failed_job).
  • The DP-GEN tests cover successful output, missing output, truncated trajectories, non-contiguous timesteps, atom/type-map mismatch, invalid boxes, terminal failed task states, prefix salvage, report allow-list propagation, and default-disabled validation.
  • The DPDispatcher tests cover failed-result filtering, opt-in failed-result download, mixed jobs, missing files, cleanup, retry/terminal-state persistence, and default fail-fast behavior.

No signature or observed behavior incompatibility was found in this combined checkout. Recovery-disabled execution still takes the original zero-argument submission.run_submission() path.

Remaining merge blocker

DP-GEN declares only dpdispatcher>=0.3.11, while recovery-enabled execution requires the new three-argument API. The existing runtime TypeError guard is useful, but packaging/CI does not prevent an incompatible resolver result. Please either:

  1. raise the dependency lower bound to the first release containing Bump paramiko from 2.6.0 to 2.10.1 #687, or
  2. add an explicit optional recovery extra/constraint and a CI job that installs recovery with the compatible dispatcher.

Recommended order: merge DPDispatcher#687 first, publish/identify the compatible version, update DP-GEN's dependency/CI constraint, then merge DP-GEN#1984. Do not merge DP-GEN recovery before that packaging guarantee is in place.
