Dan Cockrell

I develop AI-assisted applications and interactive media, combining product direction, software development, and a background in learning design and technical writing.

My work connects how people learn and make decisions with how software presents information, handles uncertainty, and helps them recover from mistakes. I use AI throughout development, then test the result against the actual task: working software, readable documentation, and visual evidence.

Support the work

Buy me McDonald's — an optional way to support my independent software, game, and media work with a small contribution through PayPal. The support page's source is public too.

Applications and games

  • DR Companion — a DragonRealms desktop client built around Lich, Tauri, and React. Its current visual direction is a fixed isometric RTS-style board that presents the authoritative MUD room graph and live game state.
  • Magi Reader — illustrated, narrated literary reading with synchronized text, vocabulary, and multilingual support. Development is moving toward a polished solo reading experience; the repository tracks the transition from the earlier classroom product.
  • QuickGrade — local-first paper-test grading from a camera or photographs, with written-answer review and spreadsheet/document export.
  • Pirate Island — an in-development fantasy RTS simulation and HaremLit RPG, with controllable companions, autonomous factions, and investigation-driven progression. Development currently lives in a private repository.

Visual and media work

I develop illustration, narration, storyboard, game-art, and video workflows alongside the applications that use them. The work includes reference selection, asset provenance, reusable environment kits, and review at the scale and pace the audience will actually experience.

Tools and earlier work

Background and approach

Twenty years teaching English in Thailand, South Korea, China, and the United States; an MEd in Learning Design and Technologies and an MA in English. Earlier work included US Army intelligence analysis and technical writing for BASF in Korea.

That experience informs my approach to learning and cognition, interface design, technical/product direction, and documentation. I want systems to explain themselves and the evidence behind their decisions.

I also treat documentation as part of the working system: current design intent should be easy to find, experiments should be labeled, and useful lessons should survive without turning every old decision into a permanent rule.
