JSLoCCount - Java Source Line of Code Counter Tool

Calculate physical LoC (Lines of Code) and other code-related size metrics for the languages a real tree actually holds, and standard file statistics for everything in it that is not source. One scan, one account of the whole directory.

Features

  • Counts what is actually there. A marker inside a string literal does not open a comment, a block comment stays open across blank lines and nests where the language nests it, and the awkward cases are handled rather than guessed at — Fortran's column one, Vim Script's overloaded quote, Lua's long brackets, Python docstrings and Java text blocks.
  • Knows the whole tree. 458 file types, covering every language scc recognizes, and binary formats too — images, archives, models and compiled artifacts are reported by file count rather than dismissed as noise. Unrecognized suffixes are named after a scan, so gaps are visible.
  • Reports that pipe. Two RFC 4180 CSVs, or one combined table on standard output for a pipeline. Progress messages go to standard error, so the data stays clean.
  • Nothing to install. Plain Java 21 and a single jar: no dependencies, and none for the tests either.
  • Tested. 9,257 checks, including a counting case for every one of the 356 text formats.

Download

The jar is attached to the latest release. One file, nothing to install beyond a JDK:

curl -LO https://github.com/bkarak/jsloccount/releases/latest/download/jsloccount.jar
java -jar jsloccount.jar <directory>

Requirements

Java 21 or newer. Building from source additionally needs Apache Ant:

ant release

Usage

java -jar jsloccount.jar [options] <directory>

Options:

-o, --output <dir> write the reports into <dir> (default: the working directory)
-n, --name <name> base name for the report files (default: the scanned directory)
--stdout write one combined report to standard output instead of files
-x, --exclude <name> skip files and directories called <name>; repeatable
--include-hidden scan hidden files and directories too
  -q, --quiet suppress progress messages
--list-languages list every recognized file type and exit
-h, --help show this help and exit
-V, --version show the version and exit

Two reports are written, <name>-filestats.csv and <name>-sizestats.csv, both RFC 4180 CSV. Progress messages go to standard error, so --stdout can be piped:

java -jar jsloccount.jar --stdout --exclude node_modules ~/src/project | column -s, -t

The exit status is 0 on success, 1 when the directory cannot be scanned, and 2 for a usage error.

Tests

The test suite is plain Java with no framework or other dependency behind it:

ant test

It runs 9,257 checks over eight suites: the invariants of the file-type table, the resolution of every declared extension (which catches one type shadowing another), one counting case for each of the 356 text types, one hand-written case for each documented counting rule, the directory walk, the command line grammar, RFC 4180 escaping, and the combined report. Any failure fails the build and names what broke.

Eat Your Own dogfood

Run on its own tree after ant release, jsloccount reports on itself. With --stdout the whole scan arrives as one table on standard output:

java -jar jsloccount.jar --stdout .
Resource Type,File Count,Total File Count,Source Lines of Code,Comments Lines of Code
Java,28,56,2300,704
Java Compiled Class File,23,56,,
Markdown,2,56,793,0
ANT Build File,1,56,45,3
JAR,1,56,,

The line counts are empty for the binary types, which are counted by file alone, and the unrecognized files are left out of the table entirely — the run reports them on standard error instead, as a count per suffix.

Without --stdout the same scan writes two files, one with the file statistics:

Resource Type,File Count,Total File Count
Java,28,56
Java Compiled Class File,23,56
Markdown,2,56
ANT Build File,1,56
JAR,1,56

and one with the size metrics:

Resource Type,Source Lines of Code,Comments Lines of Code
Java,2300,704
Markdown,793,0
ANT Build File,45,3

Supported Languages & Files types

458 file types in ten groups. The first four groups hold the text types, counted for source and comment lines and reported in both CSVs. The remaining groups are binary and counted by file, so they appear in the file statistics only — the two exceptions being SVG, which is XML, and PostScript, which is a text format carrying its own comment marker; both are line-counted despite sitting with the images and the office documents.

Run --list-languages to print this same list from the tool itself.
