Fix IF() condition evaluation - #518
Conversation
Translate IF() to CASE so SQLite handles numeric truthiness and evaluates only the selected branch. CASE also supports legacy SQLite versions before IIF() was available. Remove the PHP UDF and cover conditions, returned values, branch evaluation, and INSERT ... SELECT. Fixes #517

Preserve the string result type of mixed-type IF() expressions.
translate_runtime_function_call() emits a raw SQLite CASE. For IF(1, 2, '3') = '2', SQLite evaluates the selected branch as an integer, so the predicate returns false. MySQL treats the IF() result as a string when either result branch is a string, so the same predicate returns true.
Apply the type coercion outside the CASE so branch evaluation remains lazy. Add a regression test for IF(1, 2, '3') = '2'.

@JanJakes Thanks for the clarification. Keeping this PR focused on #517 makes sense. The suggested text cast is not a general fix because it can break numeric comparisons.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for mixed-type handling in IF(), CASE, and IFNULL(), building on #508?

Learning: In WordPress/sqlite-database-integration, MySQL-compatible mixed-type result conversion is a shared gap affecting IF(), CASE, and IFNULL(). In the PHP translator at packages/mysql-on-sqlite/src/sqlite/class-wp-mysql-on-sqlite.php, casting mixed-type IF() results to TEXT can fix string comparisons but break numeric comparisons. A general solution must account for comparison semantics rather than apply an unconditional text cast.

## Summary
Implement MySQL-compatible mixed-type result conversion and comparison semantics for `IF()`, `CASE`, and `IFNULL()`.
This is a pre-existing compatibility gap, separate from the `IF()` condition-evaluation bug in #517. Keep #518 focused on that bug. Build this follow-up on the comparison work in #508.
## Reproduction and rationale
```sql
SELECT IF(1, 2, '3') = '2';
```
MySQL returns `1`. The raw SQLite translation returns `0`:
```sql
SELECT CASE WHEN 1 THEN 2 ELSE '3' END = '2';
```
SQLite preserves the selected branch's integer storage class. MySQL applies result-type rules across the branches. Related mixed-type conversion gaps affect `CASE` and `IFNULL()`.
An unconditional text cast can fix this example but break numeric comparisons. The solution must account for both result-type rules and the surrounding comparison semantics.
## Required changes
- Determine MySQL result-type and comparison rules for mixed numeric, string, and NULL values in `IF()`, `CASE`, and `IFNULL()`.
- Extend the translator and comparison handling from #508 to reproduce those rules consistently.
- Preserve lazy evaluation of unselected branches and fallback expressions.
- Add regression tests against MySQL reference results for string comparisons, numeric comparisons, NULLs, nested expressions, and column-derived values.
- Avoid an unconditional text cast as the general solution.
## Affected areas
- `packages/mysql-on-sqlite/src/sqlite/class-wp-mysql-on-sqlite.php`: `translate_runtime_function_call()`, expression translation, and comparison handling.
- `packages/mysql-on-sqlite/tests/WP_MySQL_On_SQLite_Tests.php`: regression coverage for `IF()`, `CASE`, and `IFNULL()`.
## Acceptance criteria
- `SELECT IF(1, 2, '3') = '2'` returns `1`, matching MySQL.
- Mixed-type string and numeric comparison cases for all three constructs match MySQL reference results.
- NULL handling and lazy evaluation remain correct.
- Existing IF() condition-evaluation and comparison tests continue to pass.

@JanJakes I found no existing issue for this gap. Created #519 and assigned it to you.
The issue covers mixed-type handling for IF(), CASE, and IFNULL(), building on #508. It includes your earlier clarification that an unconditional text cast is not a general fix.

## Release `3.1.0` Prepares the version numbers and release notes for `3.1.0`. **Changelog draft:** --- **SQLite Database Integration 3.1 is here! 🎉** This release improves **database storage and configuration** and fixes several MySQL compatibility issues. ## What's new Version 3.1 improves how WordPress sites store, locate, and protect their SQLite databases. It also fixes SQL behavior and export compatibility: - **Randomized database paths:** The default database location is now a randomized directory under `wp-content/database/`, recorded in `wp-content/database/db-path.php`. ([#502](#502)) - **`DB_PATH`:** Configure the database with one full-path constant, also available at runtime for integrations. ([#512](#512)) - **SQL compatibility:** Fix `IF()` condition evaluation and make `TRADITIONAL` enable its component SQL modes. ([#518](#518), [#509](#509)) - **WordPress table collations:** Default to `utf8mb4_unicode_520_ci` for new tables created with WordPress's charset settings, improving exports to MariaDB. Existing tables keep their recorded collation. ([#514](#514)) - **Documentation:** A new plugin README and expanded FAQ explain database storage and secure configuration. ([#520](#520)) For more information about database paths and secure configuration, read the [database storage guide](https://github.com/WordPress/sqlite-database-integration/blob/trunk/packages/plugin-sqlite-database-integration/README.md#database-storage). ## Upgrading to 3.1 Upgrading an existing SQLite site is straightforward: 1. **Back up** your SQLite database. 2. **Update the plugin** to version 3.1. Existing `.ht.sqlite` and `.ht.sqlite.php` databases move to the randomized layout automatically unless a database file path is explicitly configured. To properly **secure the database**, set `DB_PATH` in `wp-config.php` to an absolute file path outside the web root that your web server does not expose. Its directory must be writable by PHP. Changing `DB_PATH` does not move an existing database. ## Breaking changes Review these changes if you use custom database settings or integrations: - **Database paths:** Default database files now move to randomized paths under `wp-content/database/`. Explicitly configured file paths stay unchanged. Integrations, including backup and migration tools, must read `DB_PATH` after WordPress loads instead of assuming a fixed filename. - **Legacy constants:** `DB_DIR` and `DB_FILE` are now deprecated. They and the previously deprecated `FQDB` and `FQDBDIR` remain supported, but `DB_PATH` takes precedence. Conflicting values trigger warnings. - **Absolute paths:** Relative database file and directory paths are now rejected. `:memory:` remains available for in-memory databases. ## Thank you Thank you to everyone who contributed, tested, and helped update integrations. **Changes since 3.0.2:** [`v3.0.2...v3.1.0`](v3.0.2...v3.1.0) --- **PR comparison:** [`v3.0.2...release/v3.1.0`](v3.0.2...release/v3.1.0) ## Next steps 1. **Review** the release changes and changelog draft. 2. **Merge** this pull request to complete the release. Merging will automatically build the plugin ZIP, create a [GitHub release](https://github.com/WordPress/sqlite-database-integration/releases), and deploy to [WordPress.org](https://wordpress.org/plugins/sqlite-database-integration/).
IF()currently always selects the false branch because its PHP callback compares SQLite's integer condition with PHPtrue. This can silently write incorrect values in queries such asINSERT ... SELECT IF(...).Translate
IF()to SQLite's nativeCASEexpression and remove the PHP callback. SQLite then handles numeric truthiness and evaluates only the selected branch.CASEalso preserves compatibility with SQLite 3.27;IIF()was introduced in 3.32.Regression coverage checks numeric and string conditions, NULLs, nested calls, large integers, branch evaluation, and
INSERT ... SELECT. Results were compared with MySQL 8.4, and the regression tests also pass on PHP 7.2 with SQLite 3.27.Fixes #517.
Summary by CodeRabbit
IF(condition, true_value, false_value)function are now supported when running on SQLite, including nested expressions and queries that insert selected results.IFnow evaluates conditions using SQLite-compatible truthiness and returns the matching value, including forNULLconditions. Only the selected result branch is evaluated.
