Overview

Enforces the existing MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE limit (100) on the find_node_by_name route handler (/rest/v1/<ntype>/<name> and its route aliases), matching the behavior of the /rest/v1/all_cres endpoint.

Problem & Root Cause

MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE = 100 is defined in application/web/web_main.py (line 57) and correctly enforced in all_cres (line 1539). However, find_node_by_name previously read items_per_page directly from request.args and forwarded the unconstrained value to database.get_nodes_with_pagination():

# Before
items_per_page = request.args.get("items_per_page") or ITEMS_PER_PAGE

This allowed callers to request arbitrary page sizes (e.g., ?items_per_page=100000), triggering unbounded SELECT ... LIMIT 100000 OFFSET ... queries on the database, causing memory pressure and potential resource exhaustion.

Solution

Clamp items_per_page to MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE using min(), exactly following the established pattern from all_cres:

# After
items_per_page = int(request.args.get("items_per_page") or ITEMS_PER_PAGE)
items_per_page = min(items_per_page, MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE)

Changes

  • application/web/web_main.py:
    • Clamped items_per_page to MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE in find_node_by_name.
  • application/tests/web_main_test.py:
    • test_find_node_by_name_caps_items_per_page: Unit test using mock database verifying the ORM call receives items_per_page == MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE when 9999 is requested.
    • test_find_node_by_name_items_per_page_cap_integration: End-to-end integration test against a test SQLite database seeded with 110 standard sections verifying that requesting ?items_per_page=9999 returns at most MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE results, and omitting items_per_page returns ITEMS_PER_PAGE.

Verification & Testing

  • Targeted Unit & Integration Tests:
    python -m unittest application.tests.web_main_test.TestMain.test_find_node_by_name_caps_items_per_page application.tests.web_main_test.TestMain.test_find_node_by_name_items_per_page_cap_integration application.tests.web_main_test.TestMain.test_find_node_by_name -v
    # Ran 3 tests in 1.466s - OK
  • Full Suite:
    python -m unittest application.tests.web_main_test
    # Ran 57 tests in 21.803s - OK
  • OpenAPI Guardrail:
    python scripts/check_openapi_guardrail.py
    # OPENAPI_GUARDRAIL_OK: documented views OK, spec freshness OK, spec validity OK, route coverage OK
  • Formatting:
    black --check application/web/web_main.py application/tests/web_main_test.py
    # All done! 2 files would be left unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Pagination now limits requests to 100 items per page and uses 20 items per page when no page size is specified.

Walkthrough

find_node_by_name now parses items_per_page as an integer and limits it to MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE. Tests cover oversized requests and the default page size.

Changes

Node search pagination

Layer / File(s) Summary
Apply and verify the page-size cap
application/web/web_main.py, application/tests/web_main_test.py
find_node_by_name caps the selected page size at MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE. Tests verify the cap and that requests without items_per_page use ITEMS_PER_PAGE.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3d4d2

The new page-size cap works, but a malformed items_per_page value can now make a CSV export request fail. Moving the parsing into the paginated branch fixes this narrow edge case.

Use the database-backed test instead of a mock.

This new test patches Node_collection, although the adjacent test creates 110 standards and exercises the route with a database. Make that test assert exactly MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE standards, then remove this mocked test. Its current assertLessEqual also accepts an unexpectedly short page.

As per coding guidelines, “Do NOT … Use mocks unless explicitly requested | Prefer integration-style tests matching @application/tests/ patterns.”

The test using @patch.object(db, "Node_collection") should be removed; update
the adjacent database-backed route test to assert that the returned standards
count is exactly MAX_ITEMS_PER_PAGE rather than using a less-than-or-equal
check.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Parse the page size only for paginated responses.

If a client requests ?format=csv&items_per_page=abc, int() raises ValueError before the export branch runs. The export branch does not use items_per_page, so this change makes an otherwise valid export fail. Move the parsing and cap into the if not opt_format branch.

As per coding guidelines, “Minimize scope — smallest correct diff; no drive-by refactors.”
