This PR is for ticket #1108 ,it uses the same , authorization model , just uses a secondly google login . So Google answers who you are. OpenCRE answers what you may do.
below is the workflow design and it explains the whole architecture in detail :

HALF A — LOGIN

  you ──▶ python -m application.mcp login
            │
            ▼
__main__.py sees "login" → routes to cli
            │
            ▼
cli.py owns all printing (to stderr, never stdout)
            │
            ▼
        auth.py POST /device/code ──────────▶ GOOGLE
            │ ◀── user_code "BDWD-HQPK" ────┘
            │
│ cli.py prints it; YOU approve on your phone
            │
            │ POST /token (poll every 5s) ──▶ GOOGLE
            │ ◀── access + refresh + id_token

     token_store.py save refresh_token
            │
            ▼
      OS keyring, or ~/.config/opencre-mcp/tokens.json (0600)

HALF B — EVERY TOOL CALL (milliseconds)

  Claude ──▶ server.py ──▶ catalog.py "is this tool allowed?"
──▶ openapi_loader.py "what args are legal?"
                       ──▶ rest_client.py
                              │
                              ├─▶ auth.py "give me a token"
                              │ └─ fresh? return it
                              │ stale? refresh silently
                              │ none? raise NotAuthenticated

                              ▼
                     HTTP + Authorization: Bearer <id_token>

Below is the scope model :

browser session ──▶ channel "web" ──▶ ALL_SCOPES (read + write)
MCP id_token ──▶ channel "mcp" ──▶ mcp_grants table lookup
                                                │
first ever call ─────┤──▶ auto-grant read
revoked before ─────┘──▶ nothing (stays revoked)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Google device-flow login, logout, and status commands for the MCP client.
    • Added optional authenticated MCP tools to view and update saved resources. Read access is granted by default; write access requires an explicit grant.
    • Added browser-based controls to view, grant, and revoke MCP access scopes.
  • Documentation
    • Updated MCP setup, tool, and access-control guidance, including credential storage and authenticated-tool configuration.

Walkthrough

The changes add Google device-flow authentication to the MCP client, opt-in authenticated resource tools, and persistent MCP scope grants. The web application verifies MCP identities, applies scope checks to resource endpoints, and provides browser-session endpoints to manage grants.

Changes

MCP authentication and scoped tools

Layer / File(s) Summary
Identity, grants, and scoped access
application/database/db.py, migrations/versions/f3a91c07d24b_add_mcp_grants.py, application/web/identity.py, application/web/web_main.py, application/web/openapi_registry.py, docs/api/openapi.yaml, application/tests/mcp_grants_test.py, application/tests/web_identity_test.py
The database stores active and revoked grants. The web application resolves browser and MCP identities, checks scopes on resource operations, and provides browser-session grant endpoints. OpenAPI definitions and tests cover the grant and identity flows.
MCP client authentication
application/mcp/auth.py, application/mcp/token_store.py, application/mcp/cli.py, application/mcp/__main__.py, requirements-dev.txt, .gitignore
The client adds Google device-flow login, token refresh, and login, logout, and status commands. Refresh tokens use the OS keyring when available or a file fallback. The entry point loads repository environment values without replacing existing ones.
Authenticated tool dispatch
application/mcp/catalog.py, application/mcp/openapi_loader.py, application/mcp/rest_client.py, application/mcp/server.py, application/tests/mcp_auth_test.py, docs/api/mcp.md
An environment setting controls visibility of authenticated resource tools. The client derives request-body schemas from OpenAPI, dispatches authenticated GET and PUT requests, and uses tool read-only metadata in the server listing. Tests and documentation cover the authenticated tools and their requirements.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8eff3

The previously reported token-storage and login failures are addressed at the reviewed head. No actionable merge-blocking issue is established.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to a5ca7

Where imports are enabled, a valid MCP login can reach shared import administration regardless of its granted scopes. Bearer access also extends to chat. Local credential files do not consistently guarantee private storage. Resource-specific checks limit ordinary tool calls, but they do not contain these broader access paths.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The shared authentication gate now admits bearer identities to import accept, discard, apply, rerun, and completion without checking MCP grants or requiring a browser session. A registered user's valid MCP token can therefore reach operations outside the intended scoped resource surface, including when its resource scopes are revoked. Imports require the deployment feature flag; completion requires its downstream dependencies.
  • Low · security · observed: The new application credential store writes the refresh token before applying private permissions and treats chmod failure as nonfatal. When keyring storage is unavailable or explicitly bypassed, confidentiality depends on existing permissions, parent-directory access, and umask; a readable creation window or persistently readable file can expose a reusable identity credential.
  • Low · security · observed: The new standalone device-flow check persists a reusable refresh token in the scripts directory without enforcing private permissions. On a shared or otherwise readable checkout, another local user can obtain the credential. Git exclusion prevents accidental tracking but does not protect filesystem access.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Ordinary authenticated tools affect one user's saved selection, but direct bearer HTTP requests can cross into deployment-shared import workflow state and the application datastore targeted by import application. Completion additionally reaches the configured prompt service. No cross-environment or infrastructure privilege escalation is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An attacker holding a valid MCP token for a registered user can make direct requests outside the MCP allowlist. Resource-scope revocation does not stop the generic login gate from admitting that identity to enabled import administration or available completion. This route expansion is supported by source inspection; the canonical candidate's missing verification receipt remains unresolved.
  • observed — The retained credential-exposure findings concern local refresh-token files: application storage enforces permissions after writing and ignores chmod failure, while the standalone check never enforces private permissions. Exploitation requires filesystem access to the resulting file; it is not an unauthenticated remote disclosure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The REST client validates schemas, rejects unknown arguments, keeps the origin outside tool arguments, and disables redirects. Server-side audience and subject checks constrain accepted identities. Resource scope checks and session-only grant management prevent bearer-only callers from widening their own resource permissions under normal authentication configuration; these controls do not cover generic login-only routes.
  • observed — The feature-gated CSV import endpoint is unauthenticated in both base and head. Its existing write exposure predates this PR and is not counted as a newly introduced vulnerability. The new concern is bearer inheritance of previously session-gated workflow operations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Credential persistence precedes ID-token caching, and logout clears the in-process cache before attempting local credential removal. File writes are not atomic replacements, and keyring deletion exceptions are swallowed. These mechanisms do not establish complete cleanup across backend failures or concurrent processes, nor do they perform provider-side token revocation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define explicit channel and permission requirements for every sensitive route inheriting the shared login gate. Restrict browser-owned operations separately, or introduce deliberately authorized bearer scopes rather than relying on the MCP allowlist.
  • proposed — Use a shared credential-storage policy that establishes private permissions before writing, safely handles existing files, uses atomic replacement, and fails closed when confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. Include backend switching and failed cleanup in the lifecycle contract, and apply the same protections to the standalone check.
  • proposed — Specify grant/revoke ordering, absent-row revocation semantics, interrupted-commit recovery, and the treatment of already-authorized in-flight requests. Preserve grant history during rollback and verify these transitions under the production database's isolation behavior.

Sensitive Data Exposure

Reachability: Internal
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-732 — Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource

Set the token file mode before writing the refresh token. When the parent directory permits access, Path.write_text can create the file with permissions derived from the process umask. Another local user can read the token before chmod, and the token remains exposed if chmod fails. This also affects OPENCRE_MCP_TOKEN_FILE, which forces the file backend.

The creation mode protects new files only. For an existing file, set the mode successfully before truncating or writing. If that operation fails, do not write the token.

Restrict admin import routes to browser sessions.

When imports are enabled, a valid MCP bearer token with only myopencre:read can pass login_required and reach the accept, discard, apply, and rerun handlers. These routes have no scope or session check, so the token can change persisted import state or apply changes.

Apply the existing identity.session_only guard in the shared import decorator. This preserves bearer access to the scoped resource routes.

Restrict permissions on .mcp_tokens.json.

This line writes the refresh token into the repository scripts/ directory with the default umask mode. The code never applies chmod. Other local users can read the token.

Thanks Parth — I went through this against #1108, the v1 MCP boundary, and the REST auth model. The intended design is the right one: Google answers who you are, OpenCRE answers what you may do, REST stays the execution boundary, grants are session-managed, write is not auto-granted, and the allowlist still decides which tools exist.

I am not approving this version. The auth change is larger than the MCP surface, and a valid MCP token currently authenticates as a full logged-in user for every @login_required route.

Blocker

_is_logged_in() now returns True for any verified bearer identity. require_scopes is only on GET/PUT /rest/v1/user/resources. That means an MCP id_token for an existing user can call:

  • POST /rest/v1/completion (production LLM spend; #1108 deferred chat on purpose)
  • /admin/imports/* mutations when CRE_ALLOW_IMPORT is on
  • GET /rest/v1/auth/user

Revoking mcp_grants does not close those doors. The token still resolves to a user, so login_required still passes.

Fix: keep the pre-#1003 predicate for login_required (browser session['user_id'] only). Admit bearer tokens only on the routes that also have require_scopes. Put session_only on every other @login_required view, including completion and admin imports. Bearer aud should only ever be GOOGLE_MCP_CLIENT_ID (MCP door). The web client id belongs on the cookie door, not on Authorization: Bearer.

Please add tests that fail today:

  • MCP bearer + POST /rest/v1/completion → 403
  • MCP bearer + POST /admin/imports/runs/<id>/apply with imports enabled → 403
  • MCP bearer with all grants revoked + resources → 403 and completion still 403
  • Web-audience token as Bearer → rejected (not CHANNEL_WEB / ALL_SCOPES)

File-by-file

Keep (this is actually good)

  • identity.py channel split, session_only on grant endpoints, tokens never create users, bootstrap-once / revoked-stays-revoked
  • mcp_grants table + uniqueness + IntegrityError on concurrent bootstrap
  • Catalog still allowlists tools; OpenAPI membership does not expose them
  • No credentials in tool args; body from OpenAPI; token redaction on REST errors
  • Write tool read_only=False; auth tools opt-in via OPENCRE_MCP_AUTH_TOOLS
  • Tests for grants, identity, and the intended MyOpenCRE scope model
  • Migration parent 967016ee10fa is current main head

Must change

  • web_main.py _is_logged_in / login_required widening (blocker)
  • web_main.py add_header leaves /rest/v1/user/mcp_grants cacheable for 300s
  • identity.py maps a web-audience bearer to CHANNEL_WEB + ALL_SCOPES
  • token_store.py writes the refresh token then chmod; chmod failure is ignored
  • Drop the unrelated Search.tsx YouTube commit from this PR

Should change

  • catalog.get_tool / list_tool_names ignore the auth-tools flag; RestClient can dispatch hidden tools
  • server.py instructions still say v1 / auth is out of scope even when the flag is on
  • application/tests/conftest.py is pytest-only; make test is unittest, so the env isolation never runs
  • scripts/device_flow_check.py duplicates auth and writes a refresh token into scripts/ without 0600 — drop or reuse application.mcp.auth
  • No grant-management UI; the “grant write from the browser” story is curl-only. Fine for this slice if documented, but call it out.
  • Chat still deferred, which is a reasonable cut of #1108 if REST does not accidentally expose it via bearer.

CI is green, and the new unit tests pass for the model they cover. They do not cover the login_required widening, which is why this still needs another round.

Once the bearer door is narrowed to the two MyOpenCRE routes (plus tests), this is close.

Blocker. This is the merge-stopping change.

Pre-#1003, _is_logged_in() was "user_id" in session. Now any verified Google bearer (MCP or web audience) counts as logged in, and every @login_required view inherits that. require_scopes is only on the two /rest/v1/user/resources handlers.

Consequences for a normal user who has once logged in via the browser (so a users row exists) and then runs python -m application.mcp login:

  • POST /rest/v1/completion succeeds with the MCP token. That is production LLM spend. MCP v2: authenticated tools (MyOpenCRE, chat) matching REST authz #1108 deferred chat on purpose; hiding it from the MCP allowlist is not enough if REST accepts the same token.
  • /admin/imports/runs/<id>/accept|discard|apply succeed whenever CRE_ALLOW_IMPORT is on. No MCP scope is checked. Please also put @identity.session_only on admin_imports_enabled_required (CodeRabbit’s finding is right).
  • GET /rest/v1/auth/user succeeds (and returns empty, because it still reads session['email']).
  • Revoking every mcp_grants row does not close those doors. The token still resolves to a user, so this predicate stays true.

Please restore the session-only predicate here:

return "user_id" in session

Admit bearer tokens only on the views that also use identity.require_scopes. Put @identity.session_only on completion, admin imports, and /rest/v1/auth/user.

Tests that should exist and currently would fail:

  • MCP bearer + POST /rest/v1/completion → 403
  • MCP bearer + admin import apply (imports enabled) → 403
  • MCP bearer, all grants revoked + resources → 403, completion still 403

This is the right check for MyOpenCRE reads — but it is also the only scope check on the whole login_required surface.

Because _is_logged_in() already accepted the bearer, a token that reaches this decorator with no myopencre:read grant is 403 here, then can still POST /rest/v1/completion on the next request. Scope checks have to be the admission control for bearer, not a filter applied after a global login flag.

Same note on the PUT handler below.

session_only here is correct and the tests for “token cannot widen grants” are good.

Two gaps on this new per-user route:

  1. add_header still only no-stores /rest/v1/user/resources. This path gets Cache-Control: max-age=300. Add /rest/v1/user/mcp_grants to that list and assert no-store the same way the resources tests do.
  2. There is no browser UI, so “grant write from a browser session” is curl-with-cookie. Fine for this slice if docs/api/mcp.md says so explicitly.

A bearer token whose aud is GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID is classified as CHANNEL_WEB and later receives ALL_SCOPES. That turns a web-audience ID token into a full-privilege API key.

Two doors only:

  • Cookie / session['user_id'] → web → ALL_SCOPES
  • Authorization: Bearer → MCP → mcp_grants, and only if aud == GOOGLE_MCP_CLIENT_ID

Reject any other audience, including the web client id. verify_google_token(..., audience=None) is acceptable only because this map is the real audience check — so the map must not promote a web token to the web channel when it arrived as Bearer.

test_web_audience_token_is_the_web_channel currently encodes the wrong behavior; flip it to “web-audience bearer is nobody”.

The refresh token is written under the process umask, then chmod 0o600 is best-effort. If chmod fails, the credential stays in a possibly group/world-readable file and login still succeeds.

Create with the mode, then write:

fd = os.open(path, os.O_WRONLY | os.O_CREAT | os.O_TRUNC, 0o600)
with os.fdopen(fd, "w") as handle:
    handle.write(json.dumps({...}))

Apply the same rule when OPENCRE_MCP_TOKEN_FILE is set. If the mode cannot be applied, do not store the token.

served = active_tools() is correct, but SERVER_INSTRUCTIONS a few lines above is still the v1 text (“authenticated … tools are out of scope”). When the flag is on, clients will be told not to call tools that are listed. Derive the instructions from served (v1 vs v2, and whether a write tool is present).

make test is python -m unittest discover. This pytest autouse fixture never runs, so the NO_LOGIN / GOOGLE_MCP_* isolation you documented is not actually happening.

Either hook the same cleanup into the unittest setUp helpers, or drop this file so it does not look like a safety net. A stray NO_LOGIN=1 in a contributor .env would still make authorization tests pass without testing anything — application.feature_flags still load_dotenv() at import.

This is a second copy of device-flow auth that writes a live refresh token into scripts/.mcp_tokens.json with default umask and no chmod. Gitignore does not protect a shared checkout.

Please drop the script from this PR, or make it a thin wrapper around application.mcp.auth / token_store (which must itself create the file as 0600). A one-off local check does not need to live in scripts/.

Unrelated YouTube-link commit (a5ca7eb8, different author) landed in this PR. Please drop it from feat/mcp-v2 so the review is only MCP v2. The talk-link change can go in its own commit/PR.

Thanks @Pa04rth for driving MCP v2 — the Google-identity / OpenCRE-grants split and the allowlist design are the right foundation. I'm applying the review fixes on this PR now so we can land #1108 and keep the stack moving.

Keep login_required session-only; admit MCP bearer only on MyOpenCRE
routes that also require scopes. Reject web-audience bearers and harden
token file permissions.

Pushed review fixes onto feat/mcp-v2 (rebased on main after #1148):

  • login_required is session-only again; MCP bearer is admitted only via login_or_mcp_required on MyOpenCRE resources (+ require_scopes)
  • Bearer audience is MCP client id only (web ID token is rejected)
  • Token file created as 0600; refresh token required on login
  • Catalog/list_tool_names/get_tool honor OPENCRE_MCP_AUTH_TOOLS
  • Dropped conftest.py, device_flow_check.py, and the unrelated Search.tsx commit
  • Added tests for completion/admin deny, revoked grants, web-audience reject

@Pa04rth — thank you again; this is the landing form of your design.

Review blockers addressed. Bearer door is narrowed to scoped MyOpenCRE; chat/admin stay session-only. Approving to merge.
