The Myth of Μώλυ

Odyssey, Book 10, lines 302-306

The Legend:

In Homer's Odyssey, Hermes gave Odysseus the magical herb Μώλυ to protect him from Circe's witchcraft—a potion that transformed humans into swine. The herb didn't prevent Odysseus from entering Circe's realm; it gave him immunity to her transformative power, allowing him to think clearly and act with agency despite the danger surrounding him.

Our Vision:

Like the mythological herb, Μώλυ protects you from losing yourself in communication. Not by avoiding difficult conversations, but by giving you the clarity, safety, and ethical grounding to navigate them with wisdom, autonomy, and integrity. Before you speak, before you decide—you think.

What is Μώλυ? Actually Does

Μώλυ (Moly) solves three problems that happen before you hit send:

Problem 1: Missing Context

You're missing something about the other person's perspective, concerns, or situation.

What Moly does: Asks you clarifying questions before you send.

You type: "I need to tell my team about the project delay"
Moly asks: "Who will suffer most from this delay? What's their perspective?"
"What assumption are you making about why this happened?"
"What do you want them to understand vs. how might they feel blamed?"

Result: You think deeper. Fewer misunderstandings. Better relationships.

Problem 2: Crisis Language

You're in danger, or your message is dangerous.

What Moly does: Detects genuine crisis instantly and connects you with help.

You type: "I can't do this anymore, I'm ending it"
Moly detects: Crisis language (suicidal ideation)
Moly offers: 🆘 988 Lifeline • Crisis Text Line • Samaritans • International support
One-tap connection to immediate crisis counselors

Result: Life-saving connection when it matters most. <5% false positive rate.

Problem 3: Compromising Your Values

Your approach doesn't align with your stated principles.

What Moly does: Evaluates your message against 6 principles + 4 ethical frameworks.

You type: "How do I convince my partner to move in without directly asking?"
Moly evaluates: This violates Consent & Transparency principles
Moly suggests: "Have you considered being honest about wanting cohabitation?"

Result: Confidence that your communication respects your values—and others' autonomy.

The Three-Layer System

Layer Problem Solution Outcome
Layer 1: Socratic Missing context 40+ smart clarifying questions indexed by situation You think deeper before sending
Layer 2: Safety Crisis / Danger LLM-based crisis detection + instant resources People in crisis get help immediately
Layer 3: Ethical Value misalignment Constitutional AI evaluates against 6 principles + 4 frameworks You communicate in alignment with your values

All three run before you send. All three learn your communication patterns over time.

How It Works (Technical Architecture)

Μώλυ processes messages through an 11-layer orchestrator system:

  1. Context Extraction → Extract contacts, intentions, style
  2. Principle Scanning → Soft signal detection (no blocking yet)
  3. Clarity Analysis → Detect ambiguities in intent
  4. Intent Detection → What are you actually trying to do?
  5. Socratic Selection → Choose 3-5 targeted clarifying questions
  6. Safety Evaluation → Hard blocks (crisis language), soft alerts (concerns)
  7. Ethical Assessment → Evaluate alignment with your principles
  8. Confidence Scoring → How mature is your thinking about this situation?
  9. Response Generation → Craft response that models healthy communication
  10. Learning & Tracking → Record patterns, improve future suggestions
  11. Delivery & Feedback → Show user results, collect feedback

Key insight: Each layer is independent but coordinated. Layer 2 never blocks greetings. Layer 8 knows when to defer evaluation. Layer 11 learns from feedback.
