design: homepage readability, contributions, photo card and graph polish - #192
Conversation
Second gradient blob drops from 90% to the same faint wash as the first (lighter still in light mode), the animated squares peak at 10% instead of 30% and fade to a trace under the content column, the watermark is softer in light mode, and the squares are skipped entirely for prefers-reduced-motion.
…te-up link Removes undrstnd-labs/education and undrstnd-labs/developers from the Open Source grid. Adds function03-labs/WalletLabels (#15, #22, #20, #19) and function03-labs/uniswaphooks (#1), all merged PRs by FindMalek in public repos. The text Write-up link becomes a document icon labelled "Read the write-up".
Spring flip, pointer tilt, moving glare, face shading while edge-on, and a shadow plate that narrows and slides with the rotation. Reduced motion gets an instant flip and no tilt. A few perforated stamps and a postmark sit behind the stack, scattered slightly after mount.

HOME_SPOTSby the stamp ids so a missing entry fails at compile time.
HOME_SPOTShas the typeRecord<string, …>. Line 607 readsHOME_SPOTS[stamp.id], and Line 609 then readsspot.rotatewithout a guard. Suppose a new entry is added toABOUT_STAMPSinconfig/about.tswith no matchingHOME_SPOTSkey.spotis thenundefinedand the whole About section throws while rendering. TypeScript does not catch this becauseRecord<string, …>treats every key as present. The fix is to give the stamp ids a closed union in

Closes #171
What changed
components/layout/background.tsx): second gradient blob fromopacity-90down to the first blob's level (opacity-10light /opacity-20dark, first blob matched). Animated squares peak at 10% instead of 30% and fade to a quarter of that under the content column via a horizontal mask (they keep the grid's radial mask too). The watermark is a bit softer in light mode. Squares aren't rendered at all underprefers-reduced-motion. Grid, blobs, and watermark are all still there.ABOUT_BIO, which also drops it from the chatbot context.undrstnd-labs/educationandundrstnd-labs/developersfromREPOSITORIES(grid goes from 10 to 8).Icons.postdocument icon, witharia-labelandtitleset to "Read the write-up". Each face also darkens as it turns edge-on. A blurred shadow plate under the card narrows with|cos θ|and slides sideways during the flip, then deepens while you drag. The outer card no longer clips 3D or paints a flat background, so mid-flip the silhouette really turns. Under reduced motion the flip is instant and tilt is off.about-overview-stamps.tsx): two photo stamps (Kapadokya, Jbal Rsas, usingpublic/aboutphotos with a light sepia so they don't compete with the cards), one typographic "Monastir 500 millimes" stamp, and a circular postmark. Edges are perforated with a CSS mask (a radial-gradient tile plus a solid inner layer). Each stamp gets a small random offset and rotation after mount, so there's no hydration mismatch. They'rearia-hidden,pointer-events-none, and absolutely positioned inside the existing square box, so there's no layout shift. They stay behind the cards.fill-opacitynow scales from 35% to 100% by level. Background readability research
prefers-reduced-motion. Separately from conformance, moving shapes in peripheral vision pull attention away from reading, so the change both lowers their peak and keeps them out from under the text column.Measured with a headless browser at 1440×900: everything except the background layer was hidden, the content column was sampled over about 9s of square animation, and 1px grid hairlines were excluded. Numbers are the worst-case contrast at any point:
Body text passes everywhere in both modes. Muted text passes everywhere in dark mode. In light mode it only dips below 4.5 at the brightest spot of the cyan blob near the top-right of the header. For reference, the
--muted-foregroundtoken is only 4.61:1 on plain white, so any visible tint behind it lands just under AA. Fully fixing that means darkening the token, which is out of scope here and would make a good one-line follow-up.Screenshots
I checked the homepage at 1440px and 390px in light and dark mode, plus close-ups of the card stack (idle, hover tilt, mid-flip, reduced motion), the contribution graph on mobile (opens on Sep, with the streak showing as an intensity scale), and the contributions hover cards (document icon on the Databuddy write-up, new WalletLabels and uniswaphooks entries). No hydration warnings showed up with reduced motion on.
