Astral Protocol

Welcome to the Astral. We're part of an open-source R&D lab building towards a decentralized geospatial web.

Our mission is to explore where Web3 design principles can improve the functionality and fairness of the geospatial web. We apply our work by building tools, infrastructure and standards needed to create location-based decentralized applications and geospatial data systems that are verifiable, user-controlled, and resilient.

Overview

At Astral, we focus on three core pillars:

  • Decentralized Location Proofs: Enabling trustable, verifiable claims of presence.
  • Verifiable Geocomputation: Implementing geospatial algorithms in verifiable computational systems like smart contracts and cryptographic protocols.
  • Decentralized Spatial Data Storage: Facilitating the storage and querying of geospatial data on decentralized platforms such as IPFS and Ethereum.

Recent Developments

We have recently migrated our codebases to the DecentralizedGeo Github organization, where we are collaborating with the EASIER Data Initiative at the University of Maryland and the Open Geospatial Consortium to build open-source tooling across the decentralized geospatial tech stack.

Location Proof Protocol

A flexible framework for creating and verifying location proofs, supporting various strategies to attest to one's presence in a specific location.

Astral Logbook

A decentralized application that allows users to record geotagged log entries, store them on-chain, and explore an interactive map of entries worldwide.

  • IPLD-GeoTIFF-1 Public

    Tile an existing GeoTIFF at various resolutions, encode the tiles and rows with IPLD-CBOR, and pin the Blocks to IPFS. Using IPLD Resolver, we can resolve to the path of the tile that we wish to query. The Resolver returns the binary which we can deserialize, to then write to a new GeoTIFF file, for consumption on the client side.
