Allow lookup to happen outside of the context of splices

There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to lookup posts, etc, and get back JSON, outside of the context of splices. It should use the same caching and request buffering as everything else.

This is an easy change - just factoring some things out as functions.

Hmm. It looks like you can look up a single post, but you can't do queries.
