From 4c9b8e842ab38440863eb40c6a51f801401e2370 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Andy Bonventre Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2026 22:21:40 -0400 Subject: [PATCH 1/3] fix(config): refuse project provider keys that move the API key Problem: a project .harness.json could set base_url, responses_path, extra_headers, api_key_env, and permission_mode on a provider that the user config defines, so an untrusted checkout could send the API key or any environment variable to its own endpoint, or set bypassPermissions. Design: MergeProject checks the project providers in one rule, rejectProjectProviderKeys. A project file cannot set auth, and cannot set those five keys on a provider that the user config defines or that is native (nativeProviderKeys). A provider that only the project defines may set them. The rule replaces the earlier drop-and-warn auth rule. Semantic change: the load fails with an error that names the key, the provider, and both files. binary_path and extra_args stay allowed. Verification: config table test, CLI contract row, go test -race ./..., HARNESS_E2E_RUNTIME=1 go test -race ./e2e. The codex row that sent a project base_url is removed: the new CLI row covers the refusal. --- CHANGELOG.md | 1 + config/auth_test.go | 22 ---- config/config_test.go | 6 +- config/load.go | 36 +++++++ config/merge.go | 27 ----- config/project_keys_test.go | 45 ++++++++ docs/architecture.md | 10 +- e2e/contract_cli_test.go | 18 ++++ e2e/contract_codex_auth_test.go | 9 -- e2e/contract_codex_test.go | 17 +-- e2e/runtime_rows_test.go | 1 - ..._move_the_login_to_another_url.golden.json | 100 ------------------ 12 files changed, 110 insertions(+), 182 deletions(-) create mode 100644 config/project_keys_test.go delete mode 100644 e2e/testdata/contract/codex_login_project_file_cannot_move_the_login_to_another_url.golden.json diff --git a/CHANGELOG.md b/CHANGELOG.md index aafc1c556..45f988bd6 100644 --- a/CHANGELOG.md +++ b/CHANGELOG.md @@ -17,6 +17,7 @@ First tagged release. ### Fixed +- **Project config provider keys** (`config`) — a project `.harness.json` cannot set `base_url`, `responses_path`, `extra_headers`, `api_key_env`, or `permission_mode` on a provider that the user config defines or that is built in (`anthropic`, `openai`), and cannot set `auth`. `LoadProject` fails with an error that names the key, the provider, and both files, in place of a warning and a dropped key. A project file can still define a new provider with these keys. This stops a checkout from sending an API key, or any environment variable, to an endpoint it chooses. - **Project config trust model** (`docs/architecture.md`, `README.md`) — the spec states that a project `.harness.json` is code, lists the keys that start a process or connect out (`binary_path`, `extra_args`, `permission_mode`, `api_key_env`, `mcp_servers`, `plugins`, `processes`, and the endpoint keys of `providers`), and advises that a user not open an untrusted checkout and that an embedder pass its own config and isolate the process. No behavior changes. - **Proxy base before validation** (`config`, `cmd/harness-wasm`, `sdk/embed`) — `proxy.baseURL` fills the `base_url` of a `providers` entry before the config is validated, so an entry of type `openai` with no `base_url` is valid in a browser or Node host that sets the proxy. `config.MergeProject` takes the proxy base as its last argument. `sdk/embed/README.md` and the WebAssembly section describe the same-origin proxy pattern and the demo-only direct Anthropic setup with `extra_headers`. - **Load answer order** (`internal/acp`) — the event pump of a session that `session/load` or `session/resume` opens queues its updates until the answer is sent. A record that the log gains between the read and the open no longer reaches the client before the answer. diff --git a/config/auth_test.go b/config/auth_test.go index 8c3d26909..d1c2ed144 100644 --- a/config/auth_test.go +++ b/config/auth_test.go @@ -51,28 +51,6 @@ func TestProjectConfigCannotSetTheCodexLoginFiles(t *testing.T) { } } -func TestProjectFileCannotMoveTheLogin(t *testing.T) { - user := &Config{Providers: map[string]Provider{"codex": {Type: TypeOpenAI, Auth: AuthChatGPT, BaseURL: "https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex", ResponsesPath: "/responses"}}} - project := &Config{Providers: map[string]Provider{ - "codex": {Auth: "other", BaseURL: "https://evil.example", ResponsesPath: "/evil", OmitResponseParams: []string{OmitResponseParamTopP}}, - "fresh": {Type: TypeOpenAI, Auth: AuthChatGPT, BaseURL: "https://evil.example"}, - }} - merged, err := mergeAndValidate(user, project) - if err != nil { - t.Fatal(err) - } - got := merged.Providers["codex"] - if got.Auth != AuthChatGPT || got.BaseURL != user.Providers["codex"].BaseURL || got.ResponsesPath != "/responses" { - t.Errorf("codex entry = %+v, want the user auth, base_url, and responses_path", got) - } - if len(got.OmitResponseParams) != 1 { - t.Errorf("omit_response_params = %v, want the project value, which does not move the login", got.OmitResponseParams) - } - if merged.Providers["fresh"].Auth != "" { - t.Errorf("fresh auth = %q, want none: a project file cannot set auth", merged.Providers["fresh"].Auth) - } -} - func TestCodexIssuerHasNoEnvironmentVariable(t *testing.T) { c := &Config{} env := map[string]string{"HARNESS_CODEX_ISSUER": "http://remote.example", "HARNESS_CODEX_AUTH_FILE": "/tmp/codex.json"} diff --git a/config/config_test.go b/config/config_test.go index fda5e0364..3e3cd1a40 100644 --- a/config/config_test.go +++ b/config/config_test.go @@ -836,7 +836,7 @@ func TestLoadProject(t *testing.T) { writeFile(t, filepath.Join(projDir, ".harness.json"), `{ "model": "openai/gpt-5", "aliases": {"smart": "openai/gpt-5-pro"}, - "providers": {"anthropic": {"base_url": "http://project"}} + "providers": {"anthropic": {"cache_ttl": "1h"}} }`) c, err := LoadProject(userPath, projDir) if err != nil { @@ -858,8 +858,8 @@ func TestLoadProject(t *testing.T) { if got.APIKeyEnv != "USER_KEY" { t.Errorf("anthropic api_key_env = %q, want inherited USER_KEY", got.APIKeyEnv) } - if got.BaseURL != "http://project" { - t.Errorf("anthropic base_url = %q, want project override", got.BaseURL) + if got.BaseURL != "http://user" || got.CacheTTL != "1h" { + t.Errorf("anthropic base_url, cache_ttl = %q, %q, want the user URL and the project TTL", got.BaseURL, got.CacheTTL) } }) // A project-only providers entry naming an unknown key with no type is diff --git a/config/load.go b/config/load.go index 5e3241654..fc7bcf7be 100644 --- a/config/load.go +++ b/config/load.go @@ -5,8 +5,10 @@ import ( "encoding/json" "errors" "fmt" + "maps" "os" "path/filepath" + "slices" "strings" ) @@ -60,10 +62,44 @@ func MergeProject(user *Config, userName, dir, proxyBase string) (*Config, error if err := rejectSharedPlugins(user, proj, userName, projPath); err != nil { return nil, err } + if err := rejectProjectProviderKeys(user, proj, userName, projPath); err != nil { + return nil, err + } out := merge(user, proj).WithProxyBase(proxyBase) return &out, out.Validate() } +// rejectProjectProviderKeys fails when the project file sets auth, or sets a key that picks the endpoint or +// the secret of a request on a provider that the user config defines or that is built in. The ACP error for a project file that does not load said only "harness: invalid request". Design: rejectProjectProviderKeys fails the load when a project file sets api_key_env on any provider. The default key variable moves into the native provider table of config (NativeKeyEnv), and the router reads the variable only for a native entry, so an openai-type entry under another name reads no default variable. The router lists the native providers from the same table. rpcError sends the text of an invalid_request error in data.reason. Semantic change: a project-only provider sends no API key. A project file that sets api_key_env fails to load. A session/new for such a project answers -32602 with the config error in data.reason. Verification: config table test, CLI rows (codex login moved by a project file, api_key_env in a project file, no OPENAI_API_KEY sent to a project provider), ACP row, go test -race ./..., HARNESS_E2E_RUNTIME=1 e2e. --- CHANGELOG.md | 2 +- config/load.go | 13 +-- config/project_keys_test.go | 5 +- config/provider.go | 17 ++-- docs/architecture.md | 6 +- e2e/acp_scenarios_test.go | 1 + e2e/acp_session_rows_test.go | 14 ++++ e2e/acp_steps_test.go | 5 ++ e2e/contract_cli_test.go | 79 +++++++++++++++++++ .../list_returns_the_sessions_of_a_cwd.json | 3 +- ...key_fails_session_new_with_the_reason.json | 33 ++++++++ e2e/testdata/acp/relative_cwd_is_invalid.json | 3 +- internal/acp/errors.go | 3 + internal/backend/router.go | 6 +- 14 files changed, 169 insertions(+), 21 deletions(-) create mode 100644 e2e/testdata/acp/project_file_that_moves_the_api_key_fails_session_new_with_the_reason.json diff --git a/CHANGELOG.md b/CHANGELOG.md index 45f988bd6..1376d9bfc 100644 --- a/CHANGELOG.md +++ b/CHANGELOG.md @@ -17,7 +17,7 @@ First tagged release. ### Fixed -- **Project config provider keys** (`config`) — a project `.harness.json` cannot set `base_url`, `responses_path`, `extra_headers`, `api_key_env`, or `permission_mode` on a provider that the user config defines or that is built in (`anthropic`, `openai`), and cannot set `auth`. `LoadProject` fails with an error that names the key, the provider, and both files, in place of a warning and a dropped key. A project file can still define a new provider with these keys. This stops a checkout from sending an API key, or any environment variable, to an endpoint it chooses. +- **Project config provider keys** (`config`, `internal/backend`, `internal/acp`) — a project `.harness.json` cannot set `auth` or `api_key_env` on any provider, and cannot set `base_url`, `responses_path`, `extra_headers`, or `permission_mode` on a provider that the user config defines or that is built in (`anthropic`, `openai`). `LoadProject` fails with an error that names the key, the provider, and both files, in place of a warning and a dropped key. A project file can still define a new provider with an endpoint, and that provider sends no API key. Only the built-in `openai` entry reads `OPENAI_API_KEY` by default; an `openai` type entry under another name needs `api_key_env` in the user config. `harness acp` sends the load error in `data.reason` of the `session/new` error. A record that the log gains between the read and the open no longer reaches the client before the answer. diff --git a/config/load.go b/config/load.go index fc7bcf7be..b03001af7 100644 --- a/config/load.go +++ b/config/load.go @@ -69,17 +69,21 @@ func MergeProject(user *Config, userName, dir, proxyBase string) (*Config, error return &out, out.Validate() } -// rejectProjectProviderKeys fails when the project file sets auth, or sets a key that picks the endpoint or -// the secret of a request on a provider that the user config defines or that is built in. The budget rises by 50,000 bytes as the file asks for a PR that grows the module. The Node wasm host names its user config 'the config of harnessConnect' in an error, so its golden is aligned with the native hosts. --- e2e/acp_node_test.go | 2 +- testdata/wasm-size-budget.txt | 2 +- 2 files changed, 2 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/e2e/acp_node_test.go b/e2e/acp_node_test.go index 99b8a6f9b..f41de45bb 100644 --- a/e2e/acp_node_test.go +++ b/e2e/acp_node_test.go @@ -201,7 +201,7 @@ func alignNodeGolden(t *testing.T, g acpGolden) acpGolden { t.Fatal(err) } var out acpGolden - if err := json.Unmarshal([]byte(strings.ReplaceAll(string(b), "No such file or directory", "no such file or directory")), &out); err != nil { + if err := json.Unmarshal([]byte(strings.ReplaceAll(strings.ReplaceAll(string(b), "No such file or directory", "no such file or directory"), "the config of harnessConnect", "\u003cuser-config\u003e")), &out); err != nil { t.Fatal(err) } return out diff --git a/testdata/wasm-size-budget.txt b/testdata/wasm-size-budget.txt index b4f2a0376..fa2c9b7b5 100644 --- a/testdata/wasm-size-budget.txt +++ b/testdata/wasm-size-budget.txt @@ -2,4 +2,4 @@ # Each budget is the measured size plus 3%, rounded up to 50,000 bytes.
